In Maine in the 40’s my school bus driver was the chief of the nearby Indian Reservation - Joe Nichols.

True story: A friend of mine, from Pakistan, has moved to a small town in the Midwest. Most of the residents there are German Catholics and Lutherens who have lived there 4-5 generations. He is a “novelty” in town, and people will drive by his house, & slow down to see the “new foreinger” who has moved to town.

I moved from a major metropolitan city, in the South, to nowhere-ville WI.

You know it’s a small town when they call play-by-play for church league softball games on the radio. No, I’m not kidding.

  1. You’re the only one in your grade level at the local one room school.
  2. You wake up with the neighbor’s horses and cows grazing on your lawn because someone didn’t shut a corral gate tight.
  3. You are the only house in town not on the party line (my dad took emergency calls at night - fires, medical emergencies).
4 You get your milk from the folks across the road and your eggs from the egg man on the other side of town.
  1. Everyone in town knows your parents…but not by their formal names.
  2. Your junior high is three classes per grade and the teachers move form room to room not the students.
  3. There are no stop lights in your town…we got a flashing red at the railroad tracks after a car load of high school students tried to beat the train and lost.

  1. At noon, the lunch “siren” rings letting the farmers know what time it is.
  2. Your church bulletin shares space with 3 or 4 other neighboring-town churches (20-50 miles away), and one priest serves all of them.

You know that you’re growing up in a small town when

*The Methodist church lets out at 11:45 so they can beat the Baptists to the cafe. Then, next thing you know, the Baptists are letting out at 11:30! Such a vicious cycle! .
Hee!

Sign at city limit:

"Welcome to Smalltown
Population - 1

Mayor - John Smith
Police Chief - John Smith
Sheriff - John Smith
Chairman, City Council - John Smith

Please drive safely - the life you save may be John’s"

This man apparently didn’t find any charm in small town life:

From the Salina, (KS) Journal
“We moved to Quinter four months ago. we could get used to their second-rate school with two sets of rules. We could even get used to driving 60 miles to real grocery, clothing, auto and hardware stores. We could even handle the high cost of living out here, or even the wind always blowing from the north, south, east, west-sometimes at the same time.
But to be forced into living in the ice age for five days without electricity and losing most of our food-that’s too much to deal with.
The best thing to come out of Quinter is Interstate Highway 70. And they keep closing it. Why can’t they put the power lines underground like other states heve done in rural areas? They even opened a shelter 35 miles west of Quinter. But all roads going there were either closed or too bad to drive on. And no matter what happens out here the locals just smile and wave, proving they have lost their grip on reality.”

Bet his kids had a hard time in the second rate school after that.

lol, the area of Vermont that I live in isn’t small by local standards. But I’m a member of the 251 club, and we try and visit (and photograph) all 251 towns in the state. So I’ve been through a LOT of towns, and I have tips on “How to tell that you might be in a small town”

-There is no post office, or if there is a post office, it’s attached to the postmaster’s house.

-Main Street…isn’t paved

-You can’t actually find any signs with the name of the town, so to take your photograph you have to scribble the town name of a piece of scrap paper and tape it to a tree.

-The town hall displays the local school honor roll…and there’s only 5 students on it.

-The only business in town is shoebox-sized, and contains a general store, post office, liquor store, video rental, deli, and bank…all run by the same person.

-The general store also has 3 cats walking around inside, and a dog sleeping under the cash register.

-Your local politicians campaign at the dump!

(all true!!)

I’m also someone that hated growing up in a small town. Some idiot found out I loved Metallica so they went all over the place telling people I worshiped Satan…

It was not a pleasant life for me. 😦

You know you’re from a small town, when you read this, & realize that the siren rings at noon everywhere within a 40 mile radiius!!
