You post on a local forum using a clever handle, and everybody knows who it is.

We live rurally, near a small city. We enjoy driving through town during “rush hour,” listening to the traffic reports from Denver on the radio.

We think we’re pretty close to civilization, because it’s only 40 feet to the pavement, as opposed to our last place, where it was 20 miles.

We destroyed a local landmark. We live off a fairly busy 2-lane highway. Our house was pink when we bought it, but we hate pink and made it ivory. Turns out that directions frequently included things like “Three miles past the pink house.”

“Turn left and go to the stop sign” can be a distance of between two and twenty miles.

When we call the vet to get our mare’s teeth floated, she says, “Yeah, I saw she was looking a little thin.”

God bless us all,

Ruthie

My BIL moved his family to a small town in North Dakota. The sign said Absaraca population 17. When he bought the property the locals called him and asked him how many in his family so they knew how many rows of sweet corn they needed to plant. So when he told them he had 6 kids… they had to plant an extra row of corn and order a new sign for the town.

When I visited him with my 3 children and ex-husband the whole town knew our names before I ever made it to the post office to buy a gallon of milk… yes the post office.

Time for this post to get a new life. BTW I’ve moved to a bigger town. We have few churches here though 😦 and few Catholics 😦

You know you live in a small town when your father picks up a stranger whose car is broken down and turns out to be the priest’s cousin who has come for a visit. Everybody tells you about it before you see your father.

----There’s a potluck and everyone knows whose dish not to eat, but they take some anyway so the person wont feel bad because nobody ate it.
Awww, that’s how life should be!

What a fun post!
This happened to me:
You know you live in a small town when:

You go to the post office the day after you move to a small town and the postmaster says to you "You must be ‘Jane Doe.’ And you say yes, but how did you know… He says: “Well, you’re the only face I’ve never seen before and I already have mail for you”

I love my small town!!!

Chuck Norris come to your town, and half of the town of 800 show up to see him! And you get autographs and get to have your picture taken with him.

All directions to places in town start with “Take the main road to the one light…”

You know you live in a small town when you have to take turns being the town drunk:)

There’s nothing to eat at restaurants but “Diner” or buffet food. 😦

Actually farming community…

…to visit your nearest neighbor, it was 1 mile around the mountain to the other side

-------no stop lights/signs, everyone just knew where to slow down and look

…neighbor to the east was the county sheriff and to the west, his deputy

…parents friends are your teachers (2nd thru 11th grade)

…local store was the gas station/post office/“city hall” and next to it the garage

…friends come over to visit immediatly after you hvae been to the “big city” to find out
what it’s like

…local swimming hole was the river (lake had snapping turtles)

…local football games are broadcast on tv in lieu of national programming

…summer jobs were going around to the other farms and picking up hay bales

Loved living in a small farming community in the hills of Virginia…unfortunatley “city folk” started moving in while I was on active duty and now it’s a “Yuppie” community…

you know you live in a small town when the rule is no one in town can get their mail delivered to their houses but have to have a post office box in the 12 x 12 post office and come get the mail during office hours only or pay to have mailbox on the highway outside the town limits, a walk of 4 blocks in either direction.

when the only thing other than a post office and little school house is a hardware and feed store that has free hotdogs on every other saturday.

when you can live there for years and everyone who comes to visit knows more about the house and who did what to it and how the furniture etc used to be set up than you ever cared to know.

Well I live in an old railroad town but I went to college in a small town and I know that:

You know you live in a small town when:

the priests still wear black fedoras or straw hats,

there is actually a house with a white picket fence and the picnic table does have a red and white checked table cloth,

and your teachers still invite you over for sweet tea and to have some of the apple pie that’s been sitting on their windowsill.

Small towns are great. I do miss my time in the small communities in which I’ve served. As I’ve moved up to larger towns I find less time to visit here at CAF 😦

Here is one I am not sure I’ve mentioned. You know you are in a small town when you call 911 and the EMT treats your injuries and anoints you at the same time because he is also the priest. Another thing I am no longer doing.
