You must not challenge the NO Mass

Ask a Traditionalist what he loves more, Jesus or the form of the Mass, and he will inevitable say the form of the Mass, for, if he loved Jesus more, he would not nickpick over the form but joyously celebrate the Mass according to whatever Catholic rite.

Ask a Traditionalist what he loves more, the truth or his opinions, and he will inevitably say his opinions, for, if he loved the truth more, he would not condemn the Second Vatican Council but rejoice in the deepening of the Faith that came out of the council.

Ask a Traditionalist what he loves more, the Pope or his misunderstanding of the Papacy, and he will inevitavbly say his misunderstanding, for, he if loved the Pope more, he would not speak ill of the Holy Father nor reject him, even if said man was a wretched sinner.
Ask Eucharisted what he loves more, wisdom or the sound of his own voice, and he will inevitably say the sound of his own voice, for, if he loved wisdom more, he wouldn’t post such tripe. Or at least he wouldn’t be so sophomoric as to leave his rantings unsubstantiated. Or at the very least he would act as if he had been Eucharisted.

It’s the spirit of hypocrisy and self-righteousness. Catholics who believe they are holier than others by clinging to the Latin Mass while attacking the Ordinary Form of the Mass, and who lash out at Vatican Council II for supposedly breaking Tradition and splitting the history of the Church into two (pre-VCII and post-VCII) while loving the other ecclesial councils, are very similar to the Pharisees whom Jesus condemned. But they are so blinded by their own pride and their own false understanding of theology that they cannot even see their sins, and some of them even regard these sins as virtues. It is a horrible nightmare that gives birth to heresy, schism, disobedience, and damnation. We are commanded by God to honor the Church and the Pope, our mother and our father, and Jesus has said if we follow His commandments we will be friends.

Left good taste behind when you got up this morning–“Eucharisted”.

Here’s a hypothetical question for you guys:

If an OF Mass is celebrated properly (no abuses) and reverently, is it on par with the EF Mass, or do you guys still believe the EF Mass is superior?

I ask because I attend Mass at two different parishes: my RCIA parish is full of abuses (and I won’t be going there any more) and my home parish is very reverent and “by the book.” I enjoy Mass at my home parish very much.

I do plan on attending an EF Mass as soon as I can gather up the courage to (the EF Mass intimidates me).

Thanks.
The big problem hear is that the OF Mass is “VERY RARELY” celebrated properly. I will never forgive the clergy who changed the OF Mass from the Tridentine Mass. The Tridentine Mass should be the OF Mass. Their isn’t two forms of the same rite in the East, is there?. No there isn’t. Separate Liturgies “Chrysostom and Basil”, both very reverent. But not two forms of the same liturgy.

And I guess the 60’s priests didn’t lash out against the Traditional Mass, and Church, when it destroyed the statues, removed altar rails, changed the theology of the Mass. Deepening in faith. Huh!. That is why churches are closing, Europe is becoming Atheistic. Islam is becoming the dominant religion in western Europe. Open your eyes!.

Keep this in mind!. Liberal Catholics will never be able to defend their faith against Islam. Traditional Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians can!!.

What, exactly, is a liberal Catholic?

Speaking for myself:

I’m definitely a traditional Catholic (not a Traditional Catholic). I think Vatican II was a perfectly legitimate Council (although it’s results are problematic) and I think that the NO Mass is a valid and licit mass, although it also has some problematic results. While I do not challenge it’s validity, I always go for the EF over the OF and will continue to encourage others to do the same.

That said, people can disagree on what Vatican II says not because you can disagree with an ecumenical council, but because the documents are so ambiguous and vague, and they do not carry the tone of other councils. Example? At Trent after every declaration they would put at the end, he who disagrees is anathema or something to that effect. Vatican II was a Pastoral Council, and one of the few called without the intention of combating a specific heresy.

That said VII did not declare the New Mass. The Tridentine Mass was said at VII every day, and Latin was used for communication. Sacrosanctum Concilium, the document which called for a revision of the liturgy, did not actually revise the liturgy. The Apostolic Constitution Missale Romanum changed the mass. What was important about this change? It did not include the beginning of Quo Primum as was the case with every other revision (the liturgy can be revised, but only be legitimate authorities).

That said an Apostolic Constitution does not have the same weight as an Ecumenical Council. A Council is theoritically more powerful than a degree of the Pope (see Council of Constance). However should a Council be called (which I think if it were, would be an absolute disaster) they could overrule an AC. The Holy Father today can overrule an AC. However an AC cannot be overruled when it proclaims an infallible Dogma, such as Ineffabile Deus (Immaculate Conception, ex cathedra infallible Dogma, can never be changed) or Munificentissimus Deus (Assumption of Mary, again this can never be changed as it is an ex cathedra statement and the Pope specifically uses his Infallibility).

The Liturgy however is not dogmatic, and can be changed by proper authorities. Because it not a dogma, discussion can be had. The Liturgy however cannot remove the words “This is my body” or “This is my blood.” [On a side note this is why I find the debate over “for many” and “for all” to be wasted, as it does not affect the validity of the Sacrament.] However until there is a change, it must be obeyed. So while one can disagree about the NO, you can not challenge it’s validity. In the same way that the ceremonies around a Sacrament can be changed (the words said during the Consencration, except “This is my body” or “This is my blood.” Note however that changing these without authorization would be gravely illicit. Another example would be a Marriage ceremony.), Just not the Matter or Form (Water, Trinitarian Formula, Laying of Hands, Oil of the Sick etc.)

There’s no such thing. Liberal and Conservative don’t apply to Religion. Your either Contemporary (different from a Modernist which would be heretical. A contemporary would for example say the Ave or the Pater in the vernacular, or would attend the OF of the mass, would incorporate the luminous mysteries, but still hold to the essential Theology, using versions of the Bible such as the NRSV or NAB. None of these things are bad, they are all Noble and Pious Catholic customs). Or you are Traditional (example would be EF mass, praying in Latin, fasting for 3 hours or at Midnight before Communion, Using Bibles such as the D-R or Jerusalem (not New) but again holding to the Theology).

We may disagree with the implementation of Vatican Council II, but it is an act of disobedience to disregard it completely. In fact, it is always wrong to disobey an order from legitimate authority, no matter what we think of it, unless it is an order to sin. Otherwise, we must submit in humble and faithful obedience.

Even more than this, we have lost sight of what is most important: even more than the form of Mass we might attend, we have forgotten that we are to worship God in spirit and in truth, in humility and love. As I have been journeying in my Catholic faith, I thought that I was growing deeper in true worship; to an extent, I have been, but I was convicted today to take a long, hard look at where I am spiritually. I realized that I have not been giving God the worship he deserves, either because my mind or heart is not in it, or I am distracted by thoughts or what is going on around me during Mass.

God is the object of our love, and we are the object of His love. The sacraments and the Mass, whether they are pre- or post-Vatican Council II, are still the sacraments and the Mass. Perhaps we should all look internally at ourselves, take stock of how we are giving God worship at Mass, and identify the good things we do as well as what needs to be improved. The “in-fighting” has to stop, or else we as Catholics will continue to make the Church a house divided against itself.

We need to do more than seek God’s blessings. We need to seek God Himself if we are to be truly repentant and give Him the worship he deserves.

It was the sheer hatred for tradition such as this poster has demonstrated that led directly to the removal of altar rails, destruction of altars and statues and relegated such devotions as the rosary to a back room somewhere. In their quest to become relevent and modern anything and everything traditional was thrown out and sneered at by people such as this poster. There was no time to even remember what the Church had been. The Old Mass was gone and good riddance. The Old Church was gone and good riddance Now and only now could the real work begin:thumbsup:. Whatever that was:confused:.

And if you want to see someone who truly thinks of himself as Holier than the Pope, look no further than our friend .Eucharisted who has shown that he is indeed just that.

It’s the spirit of hypocrisy and self-righteousness.
It is not hypocrisy and self-righteousness to hold fast to the traditions and customs that have been handed down to us throughout the centuries. It is not wrong to believe what has been believed always, everywhere, and by all. On the contrary, it is very Catholic.
There would be nothing to attack if priests and bishops would actually obey the Second Vatican Council concerning the Liturgy and observe the rubrics of the Ordinary Form. Is that really so much to ask?

Pope Paul VI spoke of the “smoke of Satan” having entered the Church and Pope John Paul II talked about a “silent apostacy”. Pope Benedict XVI has long envisioned the current “reform of the reform” because he saw what the liturgy had become; banal and centered on man. It seems to be the rest of the Church that’s living in la-la land. The traditionalists are the small minority that keep saying “YES, yes Holy Father, we see what you are talking about”.
Ask a Traditionalist what he loves more, Jesus or the form of the Mass, and he will inevitable say the form of the Mass, for, if he loved Jesus more, he would not nickpick over the form but joyously celebrate the Mass according to whatever Catholic rite.
Again, perhaps if the majority of priests and bishops would obey the Council and observe the rubrics, we wouldn’t have a problem. It is because traditionalists love our Lord that they wish to worship Him with reverence and solemnity. When I attend a novus ordo Mass, I don’t see a whole lot of people joyously doing anything. For most people it seems to be a chore to go to Mass and they put as little effort as possible into attending. It’s funny because we think that since the people have more responses and hand motions in the OF that they know more about what’s going on. Blah! I guarentee you the majority of adults that go to a typical OF Mass couldn’t explain the basics of why we do what we do. A five year old from a traditional parish, OTOH, has already been well trained in the Baltimore Catechism and could probably give a very simple but completely accurate understanding of the Mass.
Ask a Traditionalist what he loves more, the truth or his opinions, and he will inevitably say his opinions, for, if he loved the truth more, he would not condemn the Second Vatican Council but rejoice in the deepening of the Faith that came out of the council.
I would like an example of one aspect of true doctrinal development that came from the Council that traditionalists reject. However, I can think of a whole bunch of erroneous interpretations of the Council that any decent Catholic should reject.
Ask a Traditionalist what he loves more, the Pope or his misunderstanding of the Papacy, and he will inevitavbly say his misunderstanding, for, he if loved the Pope more, he would not speak ill of the Holy Father nor reject him, even if said man was a wretched sinner.
I agree that we should never “speak ill” of the Holy Father and certainly we must not reject him. But don’t confuse that with legitimate criticism of a pope’s actions. If a pope kisses the Koran or allows a statue of the Buddha to be placed on top of a tabernacle, it is perfectly legitimate to question the prudence or correctness of such actions.

And our parents sat in the pews along with us, did they not Palmas? And in the space of two years or less, everything that we grew up with as kids was out the window. Have we not prayed for over 40 years that what was lost would one day be restored?

If I could do but one thing, it would be to restore the tradition that when one walked into Church, one was entering the House of God. One kept one’s mouth shut. One did not greet one’s neighbor and chit-chat before Mass. Gee, one could actually kneel and pray before Mass. Punctuality was respected too. I could go on and on.

The deepening of the faith that came out of Vatican II? I wish I had a time travel machine and I could take our friend Eucharisted back to my parish in October of 1962 and let him compare then and today. There’s a bit of history in that Eucharisted which Palmas will understand.

The thing is if you could take him he probably would not believe what he would see. No, because in his mind those things did not happen, could not happen and never did happen. No for him the Church was mired in desolation and dying on the vine prior to Vatican II. We did not have the same exuberant faith that pervades the Church today. Nope, we didn’t even know what was going on and were so helpless and ignorant that all we deserve today is his contempt.

And the sad thing is that so many people today feel just like he does and they don’t even realize that they have been sold a bill of goods by those who have vested interests to maintain in todays Church…
