Some place I read there was a promise made by Our Lord and/ or the Blessed Virgin, that if a certain prayer was said throughout your life time or a certain practice performed, you would not die without a priest being present. I searched the internet but can’t find any reference. Does anyone have any ideas?

It’s one of the alleged promises of Mary to people who pray the Rosary regularly, said by Alain de la Roche to have been given by Mary to St. Dominic, along with the Rosary.

Although Alain de la Roche is often called “Blessed Alain de la Roche”, he was never officially beatified, and his writings about St. Dominic and the promises are considered unapproved private revelation, so we can’t discuss them here as they are not approved by the Church.

My dad said the rosary daily for 66 years and there was no priest present when he died.

He did have a pretty peaceful passing though.

Why would you want or need a priest to be present?
To get the last rites before you die - final confession before death, basically. Traditionally it was considered a negative thing to die without the last rites as you could possibly die with mortal sin on your soul and be sent to Hell. Our understanding of the sacrament has evolved a bit. We no longer regard it as something you absolutely must have at the last moment and you can instead receive Anointing of the Sick some time before you die, and have final perseverance/ perfect contrition at the time of death even if the priest does not arrive in time.

I think saying the Rosary daily for 66 years would definitely put you on track for a good death with Mary welcoming you when you pass over.

When I was a child my mother was purportedly told by a priest that if you attend nine First-Friday masses in a row, you would not die without a priest being present.

So she dragged all of us kids to FF mass for nine months straight. I guess it remains to be seen if this is true.

Doesn’t the first Fridays and first Saturdays promise that you won’t die without the sacraments?

I’ve wondered about how getting the sacraments before you die could work besides a priest by your deathbed.

I felt a strong urging to go to confession this weekend (I thought I was in a state of mortal sin, though the priest told me he believed I was not). I did and then went to Mass afterwards. If I were to have died in a car crash after Mass, I’d think that going to confession and Mass right before death would be keeping the promise. I don’t believe I committed any mortal sins in that time:)

Opinions?
