How Can I Show Protestants That I As A Catholic Do Not Worship Mary As God (trinity) But Do Highly Honor Her Among The Saints? I Ask Because One Of The Pastors I Talk To At A Church Say’s Well It Look Like They Are Worshiping Her As A God Their For Its She Is An Idol ?

Tell him we honor our Mother as explictly stated in the Fourth Commandment, ad we worship God as explictly stated in the First Commandment.

Well, you have already told them that you do not. They must think you are lying. Ask them why they think the way they do. From their answer, you will see that they do not know much about the Catholic Church, or about veneration. Tell them that worship of Mary is a mortal sin and no Catholic must ever do that. Even more, Mary would be horrified if we were to worship her, since everything she ever did was to bring Jesus to us. Her entire purpose was to present Him to the world, and to lead others to Him. Catholics are to worship only the Holy Trinity. Period.

Ask them if they call Mary blessed. They had better, since it’s in scripture (Luke 1:48). Many Protestant denominations have reduced the Mother of God to a mere surrogate womb, thus insulting God’s choice and His power. John the Baptist said that God could raise up children for Father Abraham from stones (Matthew 3:9, Luke 3:8). So, since God could do that, why did he choose a teenager named Mary to bear His only Son? From all of the women who would ever exist on earth, God chose Mary, and sent the Angel Gabriel from His presence to speak directly with her (Luke 1:26-38).

If you have a Catechism, section 971 deals with her veneration.

I would mention to them that it is not strange that Catholics venerate Mary. It is strange that they do not.

Christ’s peace.

I would be firm in insistence that Mary is not equated with diety. She is the mother of God, but a human. It is a hard to explain this mystery, like the Trinity.

Then take up the thought similar to St. Clement who says, “The glory of Mary and the saints lives only in Chirst, and in Him it has its terminus.”

Lastly, take up the Apostle’s Creed, the oldest summation of Catholic faith. Mary is honored, but their is one God and she is not him.

Once you point out that we do not worship Mary, there still may be the question of why Catholics kiss and kneel before her statue. When I’m asked this question, I ask the other person if they have any pictures of their family members who have passed on. Usually the answer is, “Yes, I have a picture of my mother (or father, uncle, grandmother etc…).” I’ll then ask if kissing that picture is worshiping their mother. Usually the response has something to do with honoring and remember that person. I point out that this is the same thing that Catholics are doing when they kiss or kneel before statues, that we are honoring Mary, who is not in the statue, but in heaven.

This is also some more information about “worshiping statues” and Here is a link to all of the tracts on catholic.com about Mary and the Saints.

God Bless!

When my husband was going through RCIA he heard a speaker field this kind of question. The answer was something to the effect that, “Some Catholics do seem to worship Mary but THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO.”

Hi
Again, there is a mis-understand by our separated brothers/sister on this teaching. I guess from the outside it might look like we worship Mary. Of course, we do not. We honor and venerate her as the closest person to our Lord since she is the mother of God. And who better to ask for intersession from but from the Blessed Mother.
If you want to extend the discussion even further, tell the Pastor, that Mary was the most Perfect human person ever… Keep in mind, that Jesus was a divine person who took on a human nature.
Also that Mary is the new ark of the covenant. As she held the word that became flesh within her.

hope this helps a little
God Bless
