How Can I Show Protestants That I As A Catholic Do Not Worship Mary As God (trinity) But Do Highly Honor Her Among The Saints? I Ask Because One Of The Pastors I Talk To At A Church Say’s Well It Look Like They Are Worshiping Her As A God Their For Its She Is An Idol ?
Well, you have already told them that you do not. They must think you are lying. Ask them why they think the way they do. From their answer, you will see that they do not know much about the Catholic Church, or about veneration. Tell them that worship of Mary is a mortal sin and no Catholic must ever do that. Even more, Mary would be horrified if we were to worship her, since everything she ever did was to bring Jesus to us. Her entire purpose was to present Him to the world, and to lead others to Him. Catholics are to worship only the Holy Trinity. Period.
Ask them if they call Mary blessed. They had better, since it’s in scripture (
Luke 1:48). Many Protestant denominations have reduced the Mother of God to a mere surrogate womb, thus insulting God’s choice and His power. John the Baptist said that God could raise up children for Father Abraham from stones (
Matthew 3:9, Luke 3:8). So, since God could do that, why did he choose a teenager named Mary to bear His only Son? From all of the women who would ever exist on earth, God chose Mary, and sent the Angel Gabriel from His presence to speak directly with her (
Luke 1:26-38).
If you have a Catechism, section 971 deals with her veneration.
I would mention to them that it is not strange that Catholics venerate Mary. It is strange that they do not.
Christ’s peace.
