I ordered a copy of YouCat several weeks ago, but hadn’t really read through it until this morning. I was flipping through the index and ran across masturbation, paragraph 409. My jaw dropped when I read the following:

“The Church does not demonize masturbation, but she warns against trivializing it.”

Why in the name of the Almighty would this be handed to teens?

two questions
why isn’t this added to one of the dozen threads already out there on this topic

why does this statement bother anyone?
when did the Church ever “demonize” any sin, except those committed by the demonic or demon worshippers?

I have a better idea. Why not just get rid of the YouCat, and all that other sily stuff just for youth. We complain so much about the immaturity of today’s youth, and yet we promote it by creating this whole youth sub-culture. Treat them like adults. I’m 19. I’ve never read any youth stuff, or gone to any youth gatherings. I actually just ordered a concise edition of the summa theologica; give that to young adults to read; don’t simplify or dumb down things for them. If you want today’s youth to be mature we must treat them like mature adults.

I do like this, but we have to understand that the youth are not mature adults yet. I think youth programs can be beneficial, but I also do not see a point in providing them any other Catechism than is already available…the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The difficult parts within it for the youth to understand can be explained by a mature adult using that text and the references that are within it.

When I think of “youth” material, I think of the St. Joseph First Communion Catechism and the Baltimore Catechism, #1 that we teach to our 6-yr-old.

What is the problem with it? Yes, it is a sin, but it is forgivable, so therefore not “demonized”. The YouCat also says it should not be trivialized, so…

How I interpret that is Masturbation is not a trivial matter** (ie. it is important)****, but if one falls to it, it is a forgivable sin and the person is not cast away from God forever, as demons are.**

Isn’t this true of all sins? 🤷 Would you rather teens be taught that if they masturbated, they are forever doomed to hell, lost to God, and nothing can be done to mend the relationship with God?

Context, context, context. Your single sentance cut and paste lacks context.

Youcat is set up in Q&A format.

The Q for paragraph 409 is “Is masturbation an offense against love?” The response is “yes”. Youcat then starts with the CCC citation (paragraph 2352) and goes on to explain how insidious masturbation can be leading to isolation and addiction.

409, by the way is right between the paragraphs on premarital sex and fornication which are also clearly explained as moral offenses.

Context, context, context.

I have an even better idea, why don’t you listen to the Pope and study YouCat in detail, and then after that you move on to other material.

The arrogance of youngsters when it comes to material for the youth is amazing, everybody is always too smart or too educated for what is good for them. It is interesting that someone that never read material prepared for the youth is so ready to criticize it. I think that the same someone wasted all his years in school to study topics (e.g. science) that were dumb down while he could have studies graduate school textbooks.

What is the most important thing about masturbation? Is it to say that the devil made do it, or that I have free will and that I cannot say that it is a trivial matter thus making it acceptable?

You just sound like a Catholic Popist, don’t you know that here we are dealing with “sola scriptura”? I can bet that you even believe in Sacred Tradition.:D:D:D:D

we will pass on your suggestion to the Pope, who prepared this little book, and tell him your opinion

please tell me again why this sin, among all others, deserved to be “demonized”

No doubt, this is an area where many youth struggle both in committing the sin and in agonizing over guilt because of the sin. No doubt, the YouCat authors are trying to be sensitive to those concerns.

Certainly, if a young person preferred to dive into the Summa rather than the YouCat, I wouldn’t get in their way. But not everyone is ready to do that. That’s not because they’re “dumb”. I would say it’s more because they’re bored. I cannot imagine rousing many people (youth or adults) to conversion via an in depth look at the Summa.

Consequently, I think YouCat is a great resource for adults, too. 🙂

I don’t know why some quarters of the Catholic blogosphere seem intent on cherry picking quotes from the YouCat as if participants in some perverse game of “Gotcha!” with Cardinal Schönborn. The YouCat is a great, reliable resource on Catholic teaching put to an aesthetically appealing format.

Please do:thumbsup:

The pope is not infallible in deciding whether to make a youth catechism or not. If he is a reasonable man, which he undoubtably is, he would welcome any potentially helpful criticism.

Before we go and tell the Pope that he is wrong we should reflect on the following words by Fr. William Most:

d) Level 4: LG 25: “Religious submission of mind and of will must be
shown in a special way to the authentic magisterium of the Roman Pontiff
even when he is not defining, in such a way, namely, that the judgments
made by him are sincerely adhered to according to his manifested mind and
will, which is clear either from the nature of the documents, or from the
repeated presentation of the same doctrine, or from the manner of
speaking.”

How can anyone give any mental assent when there is not absolute
certitude? In normal human affairs, we do it all the time. Suppose we are
at table, and someone asks if a dish of food came from a can, and if so,
was it sent to a lab to check for Botulism. It is true, routine opening of
a can would not detect that deadly poison. Yet it is too much to check
every can, and the chances are very remote, so much so that normal people
do not bother about it - yet their belief takes into account a real but
tiny possibility of a mistake. Similarly with a doctrine on this fourth
level. And further, the chances of error on this level are much smaller
than they are with a can of food. Similarly, in a criminal trial, the judge
will tell the jury they must find the evidence proves guilt beyond
reasonable doubt. He does not demand that every tiny doubt be ruled out,
even though it may mean life in prison or death.

If one should make a mistake by following the fourth level of Church
teaching, when he comes before the Divine Judge, the Judge will not blame
him, rather He will praise him. But if a person errs by breaking with the
Church on the plea that he knew better - that will not be easily accepted.

What Cats do in the privacy of their litter boxes is none of our business!

Sorry but anybody that calls a CCC intended for young adults the “YouCat” is just silly.

Seriously, who thinks of this stuff?:rotfl: YouCat, really?:rotfl: Why not just give young adults the real CCC. Or better yet, let them read Summa Theologica, by Thomas Aquinas or maybe some papal encyclicals? YouCat sounds like an internet cat meme…lol

Anyway, the Youth Catechisms words on masturbation (with regard to this section at least) are ambiguous at best. However, what they said is not wrong either, it just shows theological ignorance. Now in no way do I pretend to be a theological expert, but even I could give a better statement about such a sin…

Here we go, another one that thinks he knows more than the Bishops do.

Here we go, another one that thinks he knows more than the Pope does.

Why do we even need Apostolic succession and education for our ordained people when we can all be protestants lead by know it all teenagers?

If you can get a group of teens to read through the Summa or through papal encyclicals, please come back and share your secret. 😉

It’s not dumbing something down to make catechetical materials available at an age-appropriate level. Even the good ol’ Baltimore Catechism has different books for different age groups. We don’t give second-graders Advanced Calculus textbooks because we’re afraid that teaching them their times table is dumbing down math for them.

The YouCat uses much more basic, understandable language in answering most of the lingering questions that people have about the faith. If it’s between that and someone reading through the CCC with a blank look on their face, I’ll take the YouCat.

If a person is motivated and wants to go through the CCC, I would absolutely recommend doing that over reading the YouCat. But a lot of Catholics just aren’t there. People need milk before they can eat solid food. We don’t criticize the milk and pour it down the drain because solid food is better.
