YouCat for Non-Catholic Daughter Off to College?

My daughter is going away to a Catholic College this month. Yay and please pray!

Even though she is not Catholic, I was thinking of getting her a copy of YouCat or Catholicism for Dummies. Who knows. One day when she is bored, or if she becomes more curious about Catholicism, she may have a glance.

Is the teaching in the YouCat Catechism, clear and Orthodox?

Is there anything else, you would recommend? I would love to give her the Baltimore Catechism, but I understand it is multi-volume and I doubt my daughter will read that.

I’d prefer traditional sources, but I’ll consider anything else.

The YouCat is a very good teaching source (if you like the format). It is the CCC (catechism) broken down for youth. I like the fact that if you find an interesting paragraph in the YouCat you can expand your reading by looking in the CCC under the same paragraph #.👍

Yes, YouCat is fine. I’d go for it. I have one, and it would probably be better for someone in her situation than CfD, at least in my opinion.
 
College is a time of vast growth. Don’t pressure too much, but gentle urgings will help. It’s where I came back to the faith.

I’ve never heard of YouCat but have heard good things about Catholicism for Dummies. However, I believe the best source of education for your daughter when she is home would be the kind and charitable YouTrueLight!

I told her to just stay open to Catholicism and to not exclude God from her life. She attends a Protestant church now and I’m hoping she will continue to attend church. Preferably a Catholic one, but at the least, a Christian Church.

I am hoping that some of the friends she makes will be Catholic and maybe invite her to Catholic clubs. The school is pretty strict. For example, as part of their three day orientation, they will invite the kids to take part in the “liturgy”.

God allowed her to be accepted into the program of her choice at that Catholic college and I am trusting the Holy Spirit to stir up her heart.

I did not like youcat. I dont buy into the idea that something needs to have cartoons and be dumbed down for high school or college kids. We expect them to learn physics, science, math and other subjects that are beyond our level but somehow when it comes to faith, we treat them like they cannot possibly comprehend the CCC. The CCC is sufficient for any Catholic. I know there was some controversy with youcat in it’s treatment of masturbation but I gave away my copy a while ago so I don’t quite recall what it was. My advice is to grab a copy, and hit the major topics college kids will be faced with (alchohol, sexual issues, and any other popular situation) and see if it is to your liking and appropriate to give to your daughter.
I work with a lot of youth in our parish and diocese and I have found youcat useful at a very basic level. However, for college I just dont think it quite reaches the level that someone might need. Imagine, your daughter discussing papal authority with a baptist or evangelical, and she quotes something from “youcat” and someone askes her what youcat is and she says it is short for youth catechism. See, it automatically loses credibility.
In college level philosophy, history, and English courses students are pressed to define and defend their beliefs and frankly, depending on the college, Catholic beliefs are treated as inferior. Youcat does not do anything to defend this attack.

Sorry, I did not read this before I posted. I actually think youcat is advisable in this situation. I was unaware of your daughters faith life. Yes, youcat simplifies and presents things in a common sense sort of way.

Exactly! For the type of people that frequently read this forum, the actual CCC is probably better, but for some, it may be better to start out simpler. Spiritual mush, so to speak, since they do not yet have the teeth for the spiritual meat.

This was basically going to be my response to your other statement 🙂 I think the friendlier format would be good for someone who is not Catholic and has been attending a Protestant church.
 
Thanks guys, I realize the two posts can seem contradictory but it really is dependant on the person using it and what it is being used for. I have no idea how I missed the important fact that the daughter was not Catholic. The OP stated it several times. Selective reading I guess.🙂

Again I dont personally like the youcat but it has to have an audience or it would not have been commissioned right? And I think this situation is a good audience.

Actually, I would suggest reading the footnotes and finding out what the REAL source is on Catholic teachings that Protestants disagree with. Where did that teaching originate? Which century can we trace it back to? Whose writings? Is there a Bible verse? I don’t think they would accept “I read it in the Catechism” or “I read it in YOUCAT.” Only Catholics accept the Catechism as authoritative; other denominations don’t care what the CCC has to say.

Regarding being “dumbed down,” our entire culture has been “dumbed down.” Read old pamphlets for teenagers from the 50’s. Teenagers were expected to have a much better vocabulary back then, than many college graduates have today.
 
She is not going to college to study religion, she is there to learn more about the human body. YouCat is an easy read and I do not think it is heretic, you should give it to her! If she one day wants to learn more, I am sure her good father will give her a more solid one…

My two daughters usually go to my old Protestant church together. Well, my youngest is at camp this week, so I asked the one going to college what she wanted to do. I said to her, “Well, you have to go to church. Are you going alone to your church or do you want to come with me?”. She answered that she would come with me, with a slight roll of her eyes.

I’m so happy!
