It’s certainly not a guide for theologians, or the be-all end-all, but I’ve found it to be a very good resource for teens and even young adults not as familiar with the faith.
Glad you liked it!Being from Baltimore, that has a nice ring to it.![]()
No problem- I’m no expert at topic placement. I take my best guess and am usually on the mark. For this one however I just wanted to reach out to the trads for answers.I didn’t mean to put you on the defensive and sorry if I did. It seems at times that this forum in particular gets all kind of questions and opinions posted which have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the stated purpose which is:
Discussion of traditions and customs of the Roman Catholic rite
This Forum used to have a different description which has been replaced by the above. In fact there have recently been posters who felt that the name of the forum needed to be changed to more accurately reflect what this forum is supposed to be about now. You will find on this forum for instance very few people who would call them selves traditionalists or even traditional Catholics in the way that term is currently understood by most.I’m not saying that there are not Traditionalists or Traditional Catholics here, just not as many as you might think from the name.
As to the Youcat itself, it is a very new publication which was totally unknown just a few years ago let alone in Traditional Catholicism. I would venture to say that many if not most who would identify themselves as Traditionalists would choose not to use it preferring instead the Baltimore Catechism for the youth or the Catechsim of the Council of Trent or some variation thereof for adults.
I am not in any way saying that the Youcat or the current catechsim are bad, improper or dcefective in any way, just that they are not what most traditionalists would choose as a first choice.
As an aside I will say that some people have stated that there are certain ambiguities in the Youcat that could lead to misunderstanding of Catholic doctrine and dogma. I don’t know if that is true, but I have heard that stated on more than one occasion.
Again I apologize if I said anything that upset you or put you on the defensive.
Before believing bad reviews, I always look at the reviewer. I have never read a bad review on the YouCat from someone I would trust.YouCat has had mixed reviews since it’s publication.
This Is The Faith is one I’ve never read a bad review on.![]()
I think that one of the YouCat reviewers was quite positive about it, he said: “So I invite you: Study this Catechism! That is my heartfelt desire.”. I think that this one trumps all the other reviewers.YouCat has had mixed reviews since it’s publication.

If this forum had polls I would poll this. I may make a poll on fish eaters for anyone who wants to vote.Being from Baltimore, that has a nice ring to it.![]()
I agree sometimes its nice to ask people with a certain spirituality about something. Although opinion-based, it can tell you things about it you might not learn otherwise. No problem- I’m no expert at topic placement. I take my best guess and am usually on the mark. You touched on my concern, too. I have heard the same thing and was hoping to circumvent the inevitable Trad / Novus discussion and get a solid direction to research the ambiguities.
I like the Baltimore catechism
We have one vote, folks. Step up! Vote early, vote often!I vote for Retro-Cat.

BTW the reviewer is kinda of a traditionalist Catholic.![]()
I just pointed out that YouCat had mixed reviews when it was published. From what I’ve seen, the bad reviews were either about minor theological points, or from the version with the bad translation that was corrected shortly after it was discovered.
Exactly. And most of the bad reviews I saw were regarding one of the non-English version’s translation, which was subsequently fixed. Before believing bad reviews, I always look at the reviewer. I have never read a bad review on the YouCat from someone I would trust.
But pointing that out without further explanation leaves the false impression that the book is a mixed bag and it would be better to avoid it. That is inaccurate and misleading.I just pointed out that YouCat had mixed reviews when it was published.
The OP did ask![]()
Maybe I am not reading your post correctly.I have not read the YouCat to make a judgement. I much prefer the Baltimore Catechism for its traditional approach in my opinion, and also my large CCC even if the larger one takes more time to understand.
It had positive reviews and negative reviews. What is to explain ?But pointing that out without further explanation leaves the false impression that the book is a mixed bag and it would be better to avoid it. That is inaccurate and misleading.
… is answered by skimming through the reviews.Does it contain anything to be overly concerned about in terms of wishy washy language or marginal errors?
