Young Celibate Permanent Deacons

Hi everyone,

I will begin by quoting canon 1031, section 2:

§2. A candidate for the permanent diaconate who is not married is not to be admitted to the diaconate until after completing at least the twenty-fifth year of age; one who is married, not until after completing at least the thirty-fifth year of age and with the consent of his wife.

Does anyone know of any celibate permanent deacon ordained before age 35? I’ve done some googling and found nothing. I am aware that the USCCB requires ALL candidates to be at least 35 at ordination, but any non-American ones out there?

Permanent deacons are not something with which I am familiar. My diocese is one of two in England and Wales that has none. Whenever I have encountered any, in any way, they have all been married.

The last I heard of young celibate permanent deacons was another poster’s idea for a new congregation of permanent deacons. I don’t think it went anywhere, though.

The only permanent deacons I’ve ever known have been either married or widowed.

Each diocese has its own standards in that respect. Contact your diocesan Vocations director for clarification. This Vocation is similar to the Consecrated Virgins, which is why they usually have to be a certain age before receiving ordination. Permanent deacons cannot remarry when widowed.

The US, and perhaps Canada, are the only places in the world where there are many permanent deacons period. So I doubt if you will find any young celibate ones.
