sigh I never get off on the right foot with you on these threads.
🙂

Hopefully this doesn’t dig me deeper, but I was trying to point out that a 13yo with D-cups wearing a tube top is more distracting than, say, a flat-chested 13yo. It’s unattractive, IMO, for a very young teen be flaunting her attributes. I’m not even referencing sexuality here, although I’m sure an argument could be made for that as well.
No arguments from me on the distraction factor. You’re right about that. I would still question any parent who would let their teen wear a tube top, especially to Mass.

Another thing I’ve noticed: teen girls with long, super-straight hair, who will sit in class or Church (or on the bus, or in the mall) and “pet” their hair. Seriously, what is up with that? I had the misfortune to sit behind a pair of teen sisters who had the aforementioned hair. One of them spent the entire Mass tossing her ponytail (which nearly swatted me in the face on one occasion) and the other had her tail over her shoulder and was stroking it like one would a pet cat. Between the hair and the miniskirts, I’m pretty sure the poor guy sitting next to me had his head down the entire time.

Oh, and they like to take their hair out of the ponytail, swish it around, then put it back in a new style.

We had a girl one time turn around and face my brother in the middle of Mass. She took her chapstick out of her little purse and put it on all slowly (like out of a movie) while staring right at him. It wasn’t seductive, let’s put it that way. My brother was just like "heh???  "

Ayyyyy…

Personally, I don’t think the ultra low-rise look is very attractive to begin with, regardless of how developed your figure is or your body type. I’ll admit, there were times that I wasn’t modest at Mass when I was that age, but I was a convert and really DIDN’T know how to dress for church! (no one really cares in my hometown). Now, I know better.

Parents really need to step up to the plate, but I think more adults should be catechized as well, since it seems that my parents’ generation wasn’t properly catechized and is just going through motions. And parents need to be better about setting limits and saying no. Also, it’s scary how our society is sexualizing children and selling so many immodest clothing for young kids, sometimes without parents even realizing. My aunt got panties for her four-year-old and in the package was one that had Tinkerbelle on the front and it said “Can’t catch this!” on the back!! Needless to say, she threw them out. But this was for FOUR-YEAR-OLDS. Like, kids who were just recently POTTY-TRAINED!!

Amen to that, Sancatamaria. Still likes seductive to me if she turned and faced your brother and put her chapstick on slowly…gross! Get a life - with God! (the girl in church).

Although this thread is about young girls, we seem to be forgetting young women and just how they dress for Mass. They can be dressed pretty provocatively at times.

I remember a nun telling something interesting and it was something that I never considered. The priest takes a vow of chasity but he is also a human being. When young women come up for communion dressed immodestly, it can be problematic for the priest. Their mind can wonder. So said the nun and I aggree with her.

Certainly during Mass his mind should be on the blessed sacrament and not on various parts of the female body. But dressing in such a way, these parishioners can cause a problem for the priest.

And so men and women should be dressed modestly in god’s house.

why me:

I totally agree with you. It’s young women and ALL women! We’re putting that message out there - and it’s not a good message! That’s why our society is so sexually driven. Do we wonder why we have all this blatant sexuality? We contribute to it in the way we dress. But in the Lord’s House? That’s pretty nasty business!!

chevalier:

I wouldn’t be a bit at all suprised if these girls go “fishing” even at Mass. I look at them and see them flicking their hair around and looking around as if to say: “anybody watching me?” I don’t think they’re focusing on the Mass at all. AND - I do not think you’re a prude. I think our culture has produced a youth of indecency and blatant sexuality. It’s sick, really.
Yes, it is. Generally, things are sick. Today I had another discussion about clubbing. A jaded lawyer told me, “You went to uni and you learnt nothing. Where do you go to meet women?” I showed him a true meaning of jaded when I replied, “Clubs are sick. I could stand it past second year.” Obviously, I’ve made an occasional visit since there, but modern diversion and entertainment just so does not work for me. And when I think kids are being ingrained with it since the earliest age…

I really would have to say that I’m pretty sure that 98% of the time immodestly dressed girls are not “fishing” at mass. While I dress modestly now, when I was 14 or 15 I didn’t dress very modestly (although I usually dressed a bit more modest for mass.) I know that for me, it was not really about getting attention from guys, but more about being like my friends and being fashionable. I really was clueless that it might be distracting to anyone. Most of them probably don’t know better. (Although there are exceptions.)
I think fashion’s as much a factor as it’s always been. The humongous cleavages from 18th century wouldn’t go even 10 years ago, although they’re probably fine by now. And that was at a time when an ankle was bad (as was a shoulder top).

Nothing that’s blatant is attractive. Some women who are really pretty are able to prevent themselves from giving any men trouble unless he’s specifically looking for it. The prettiest one at my work (we’re talking about about the mid twenties range here) is probably the last one you’d think about as “sexy” and she never wears anything less than very stylish, while also no amount of overtime work seems able to able to bring her down. And there’s a reason I don’t use words like “charming” - she’s simply unintrusive.

Compared to a flashy loud type with a lot of skin exposure, or even a simple regular flaunter (no pun intended), just guess which one I’d show to mum? 😉

By contrast sometimes women who are not attractive to the particular man have the potential to mess him up and if not that, then at least make him guard himself - in some cases you can just feel the vibes in the air and that’s not a positive thing.

I agree fully with the need for girls and women to dress modestly, and my boyfriend and I have already established what we feel will be “proper” for our two year old daughter when she’s old enough for it to matter. But, I’d also like to mention one other reason why I believe women should dress modestly. Not only do women who dress provocatively make themselves seem cheap to others, but think of the effect they have on girls who do dress with respect for themselves.

I grew up in an upper-middle class suburb full of “the beautiful people”. I swear, everyone was skinny, and tanned, and dressed in the smallest expensive clothes they could afford. Meanwhile, me with my Rubenesque Italian figure dressed in t-shirts, jeans, and long skirts. I felt UGLY. I was FAT and everyone at school made sure I knew that the reason no one liked me or wanted to date me was because I was fat and ugly and “weird”.

Besides looking like prostitots to others, imagine what these teenage/young women’s styles do to girls who “don’t fit the mold”! How many lose self esteem and do like I did? I “knew” I was fat and ugly, so I took the first man who showed interest in me, believing it was all I deserved. He couldn’t hold a job and wouldn’t clean the house, so while he played on the computer all day and ignored the kids, I worked 40-50 hrs a week and did all the housework and errands. But, I knew I didn’t deserve better–the damage done while I was a child held me back.

How can women value themselves for who they are when they are surrounded by people who believe that the only way to be popular is to “dress to impress”? Fortunately, my boyfriend loves me for me, and I am finally starting to believe him when he tells me I look good…but when those of us who value ourselves enough to cover up instead of flaunting themselves are the minority, the temptation to bow to society is hard to resist.

Sorry for the tl;dr novel…this is an issue that has caused me trouble since I was little, and I am glad to have an opportunity to talk to somewhat like-minded people

What about the 40-50 year olds doing it? I live in Florida, sure it’s hot, OK it’s HOT, but why do I have to see spaghetti straps, tight pants or culottes that show me what style of underpants you prefer and cleavage so evident that I just get embarassed that I saw them! I hate the white T shirt with the colored half bra under. And then the teens come in with the super short skirts.

If I had someone flicking their hair around in front of me, I’d say something, no doubt. Probably, “Hey, I think you look fine, can you finish that after worship, thanks.”
That’s just me.

Hey “funny”:

I’m with you on all you said. I especially like your final line with the girl flicking her hair around. Wish I’d come up with that one myself!😉

I remember one time wondering about this issue, and watching a young girl come in to church, not only dressed inappropriately, but with also an offensive carriage and manner, if you know what I mean…and then , her mother came and sat down with her, and my questions were answered. Made me take a hard look at my self, my example and my mothering.

take a container full of ice cubes, and drop the occasional one where you think necessary and then look skyward in an innocent way.

Can’t the poor guys get a reprieve at least at Church?
Nope. Look us guys have our own problems, that mostly are our own weakness, granted. But it definately does NOT help when you are bombarded with some of the lustful thoughts that permeate the brain in Mass! Especially at the hands of another person. There is no refuge.

HiTallyCatholic:

I don’t get how you men can even entertain “lustful” thoughts in church? What gives? As a woman, sexual thoughts never even enter my mind - and I’m not joking! Aren’t you focused on Christ and the Mass and the Eucharist? Focus - don’t let your mind wander. I guess we (men & women) are just so much different, that it’s hard to comprehend men even thinking such thoughts. But, that’s just my thought…What are yours?😉

By using the world “entertain” I think you are misconstruing my words. I don’t entertain the thoughts. That means during mass I just sit and lust after women. But take any man, put a girl wearing a mini skit that basically shows too much, and tell me that is distracting and can cause your mind to wonder.

Don’t get too carried away with my words. All I was saying is that for men, even mass isn’t safe from sinful thoughts. It happens.

Tally:

O.k., I get your point. But by saying wander, that sounds the same to me as entertaining - “sinful thoughts” as you say. I don’t quite see the difference, but whatever. I’m not here to argue. Just looking for observations/opinions. God bless.🙂
