Hey everyone, my first thread here 🙂

I am a Filipino living in Austria. I am helping in the confirmation-classes of my (filipino) parish for the second time and I thank the Lord for allowing me to help these kids to learn about our faith.
Our confirmation class consist of two parts: the first being more a theoretical, cathecetical part and is done by a very experienced person. The second part is a group work and is entrusted to me and other young people. The group work can take on any form we want, as long as it stays on topic. This young people, mostly previous confirmants, join and help in the group work, or just particapate to learn more. Afterwards we share with the whole class what we learned.
When I did this for my first time I didn’ t quite took it as seriously as I do now. Especially when I had a life changing experience a while ago, I became more eager than before…

This week’s confirmation-class is about the sacrament of confession and the anointing of the sick. I have been thinking about this topic for quite a while and I want to highlight sin, it’s consequences and the grace and love of God to free us from this.
My greatest challenge is that I want to focus more on the love of God, but to do that I feel the necessity to instill fear of hell on them. I know that the hell is not taken serious anymore. We filipinos are known for being religious, but when we live abroad, we somehow lose the attachement to the church. Thus unfortunately many dont take the church serious anymore, dont know the teachings of the church, believe it is sufficient to go to church every sunday, etc. - I think this sounds familiar. :sad_yes:

Most of the confirmant candidates this year, are still quite open to learn, my greatest obstacle are those who are, how shall I put this, attend or even help in confirmation class, but go to bars, smoke etc.
I have to admit that I have been like that too and only by the grace of God changed, if not am in the process of change. Nonetheless I feel the urge to remind them how serious sin is. I know that God changes them, not me, but I feel responsible, if I miss this opportunity to talk about this.

**To sum it up: How do I talk about sin and forgiveness with young people, who do not take this serious anymore. **

I hope you can help

Mark,

It may seem simple, but just try to read & “preach” from the Word. Peter and Paul’s letters are so powerful when read in entirety… as they were written to be heard in entirety (not broken apart and read in multiple days). Try Romans, Ephesians and 1Peter for a start, and share your conversion story-- how you used to do the things God detests, the same things they do, but in His mercy He “saved” you and gave you the power to stop, even removing the desire.

I believe the Holy Spirit will give you the right words to convict those He’s called to hear.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

There is nothing stronger than the Word of God for converting hearts: CC says, “ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ”.

Hope this helps. I’ll be praying for you!
