I found out we have 450000 Catholics and only 220 priests, that’s 1 priest for about 2045 Catholics. I will quit complaining about not being able to get an appointment with one. What are the numbers at your diocese?
we only have 124,000 in our diocese and 136 priests with i think between 6-12 of them being retired… or more.
So it’s about 1:984. The problem is, our diocese is really small (I mean the whole population of south dakota fits into the population of Minneapolis. ) because the state is split in half by the river. So, 1:984 is quite a bit here.
Our parish has 14,000 parishioners and 3 permanent priests.
Our priests require a dispensation to receive Communion more than twice on Sundays because our Mass attendance rate is 80% and we have 10 Masses every Sunday to accommodate everyone.
What an interesting question - I looked up the Diocese of Baton Rouge and we are currently at 1:1975 (215,298 Catholics and 109 priests). That seems like a high number, but I have fairly easily made two appointments for confession in the last few months and can think of four priests (at three different parishes) who would recognize me and know my name.
