O Come All Ye Faithful, although that’s more Christmas than Advent.

The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came.

I really like “Mary Did You Know?”, but apparently some people don’t like it because the line “the Child that you delivered, will soon deliver you” could be taken as a slam against the Immaculate Conception. Some people change it “the Child that you delivered, has first delivered you” apparently.

To me, O Come Emanuel should not be sung until Dec 16 or 17 when the O antiphons begin. to be nitpicky

also, People Look East, which I have not heard in church in 40 years

We sang People Look East yesterday (I think the first time I’ve heard it) but I didn’t like it that much. Too fast for me!

I love “Mary Did You Know?” don’t know if it’s an Advent or Christmas song, but I love it. Beautiful and haunting.
 
Also wanted to add, My Soul in Stillness Waits. At my parish, we sing that during Ordinary Time as well, but I think it’s such a beautiful Advent hymn.

no problem, it came to mind because they sung it at Mass Saturday night, I love it.

This is a Christian song so it’s ok for Catholics. It is ussualy sung on December 13. It’s about St Stephen. maybe some people think of the Swedish saint Staffan but I did not wite this song.

I also like Gaudete in Domino. This chant reminds me that our beloved Sweden was once called a Catholic country, then called a Lutheran country and now an Atheistic country. It’s so sad but the lyrics are great.
 
I was wondering why I loved “Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates” so much, but when singing it today, I realized why. Along with the triumphant/strong tune it has, it also sends a very strong, pentitential message to the singer/listener:
Fling wide the portals of your heart; Make it a
temple set apart From earthly use for heav’n’s em-
ploy, Adorned with prayer and love and joy.

We sang this as the processional this Third Sunday of Advent, and it is kind of a joyful hymn, so it was very fitting for today. This hymn makes you think, imo.
 
In addition to O Come, O Come Emmanuel, one of my favorite Advent hymns is On Jordan’s Bank:
On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry
Announces that the Lord is nigh;
Come, then, and hearken, for he brings
Glad tidings from the King of kings!

I love all the advent hymns but I think Lo! he comes with clouds descending has to be my favourite. So powerful and inspirational.

Christ the Lord returns to reign.

Every eye shall now behold him,

Rorate Coeli desuper et nubes pluant justum
Aperiatur terra et germinet salvatorem"

Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above,
and let the clouds rain the just
Let the earth be opened
and send forth a Saviour.
(Isaiah 45:8)

This is beautiful. Our local Anglican Church chants the full Advent prose every Sunday in Advent. Instead our processional hymn yesterday was “Hark the Glad sound!” which is also lovely, but - as usual - hardly anyone sung it. :mad:
 
Veni Veni Emmanuel (O Come O Come Emmanuel) is my favorite of all Advent hymns.
