Your favorite horror film of all time

Is it one of the several Dracula films (I remember the Frank Langella one was great), the Boris Karloff version of Frankenstein, a Vincent Price classic, or a more modern psychological horror movie?

For me, it would be the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Kevin McCarthy. The remake with Donald Sutherland was pretty awful, in my opinion.

How about yours, if you had to choose only one?

Well, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers is really Sci-Fi but it is definitely scary. :yup:

How about Nosferatu (the original Dracula picture)

The Mummy (the original)
The Wolf Man
Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein (which was in many ways superior to the first film)
Nightmare on Elm Street
Amityville Horror
Halloween
The Fog
The Blair Witch Project

A little genre (not gender) confusion on my part! Yes, the first installment of Halloween was really scary stuff. After that, I think it became more of a parody.

Please, none of these could hold a candle to the original Exorcist. Do I really have to say why?

Well, it may have more guga-buga moments, but the classics are classics for a reason. 🙂

The Omen scared the socks off of me when I was a young person. 😛

The Exorcist had that whiff of ‘really happened’ (or maybe that was sulfur).
The Omen series scared me to until I read a book on John’s Gospel and Revelations and the symbolism in these works.

:eek::eek::eek: It was pretty scary when I saw it in the theater back in 1973. I also read the book, which might have been even scarier! :eek::eek::eek:
 
And there’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I’ve never seen it–to close to reality for me.

Also not horror but a comedy send-up of Dracula–Love at First Bite. I loved the pychiarist and Dracula trying to put each other to sleep in a resturant. So funny!
 
I consider a Horror movie to be “good” if it succeeds in actually scaring me, becuase that’s the point of a horror movie.

In that vein, my favorite horror movies are the following:
  1. Candyman;
  2. The Silence of the Lambs
  3. The Thing;
  4. Event Horizon;
  5. The Ring
 
Della mentioned the original Halloween which was my favorite. I also liked the original Poltergeist…“They’re Here!”

The original “THe Haunting of Hill House” a movie in the 60’s. Really really scary.

I didn’t like Alien at all. I was 6.5 months pregnant at the time, and all that baby kicking while I watched was making me very … nervous.

Yes, it would help. I thought it was a silly movie first time I saw it, and I still think it’s incredibly silly. (Which is pretty ironic, since it’s based on a true story.)

Far scarier is something like “Poltergeist” or “The Entity” or the currently-in-theaters “It Happens,” which is a de facto remake of “Halloween.” Any of those…far scarier than “The Exorcist.” No question whatsoever.

EDITED to add: And apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks “The Exorcist” is silly - someone re-edited it as an 80’s sitcom complete with laugh track:

The Haunting with Julie Harris was very good.
Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane were good. I don’t know if they would fit in the horror genre.

Also Them!, The Thing (original) and The Wolfman (the original).

No offence intended, but the stereotypical “Masked Maniac kills dozens of promiscuous teenagers who try to run away from him and fail, even though he moves slower than a glacier” is not really scary. Entertaining, maybe…but not not frightening.

I Haven’t seen Poltergeist but I hope it’s better than director Tobie Hooper’s other horror “classic”, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That movie wasn’t scary, it was brainless and stupid.
