St. Louis IX, King of France:
“While extravagance is to be avoided, men should dress well that their wives may more easily love them.”
and
“You should argue with the infidel as far as the philosopher can argue, or else stick a sword through his body as far as it can go.”

There’s also a story of a party St. Louis had, to which he invited a contemporary by the name of Thomas Aquinas. In the middle of the meal, St. Thomas, a huge man, who had been thinking in silence up to then, slammed his hand down on the table and cried, “And that will settle the Manichaeans!”

St. Louis motioned a servant over, and said, “Obviously he must have just got a good idea, so bring him something to write it down on so he doesn’t forget it, and then ask him not to do that again.”

Isn’t that awesome?

Shows the good nature of St Louis, the deep dedication of St Thomas and the respect the former had for the wisdom of the latter. 🙂

If I do not bear witness to the truth, I render myself unworthy. If I
bow to men’s will, what shall I find to answer Christ on the day of the Judgment?
  • St. Philip of Moscow (1507-1569)

St. Ignatius put it so simply:
God created us
to praise, reverence and serve God
and in this way to save our souls.
God created all of the rest of creation
to help us achieve the purpose for which
God created us.

Betwixt the stirrup and the ground,
Mercy I ask’d; mercy I found.
William Camden: Remains.
(Not actually a saint but it has comforted me to know it is never too late to turn to God)

Everyone’s already taken great ones but I’m surprised no one mentioned any of these yet, especially the second one.

“Lord, to who shall we go? Thou has the words of eternal life.”
  • St. Peter
“Be it done to me according to thy will.”
  • Mary, Mother of God
“Who is like to God?”
  • St. Michael the Archangel
“Praise God and give thanks to him; exalt him and give thanks to him in the presence of all the living for what he has done for you. It is good to praise God and to exalt his name, worthily declaring the works of God. Do not be slow to give him thanks. It is good to guard the secret of a king, but gloriously to reveal the works of God. Do good, and evil will not overtake you. Prayer is good when accompanied by fasting, almsgiving, and righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than much with wrongdoing. It is better to give alms than to treasure up gold. For almsgiving delivers from death, and it will purge away every sin. Those who perform deeds of charity and of righteousness will have fulness of life; but those who commit sin are the enemies of their own lives.”
  • St. Raphael the Archangel (What wisdom!)

I just ran across this one today. St. Teresa of Avila obviously was never in Iowa. 🙂

There is no such thing as bad weather. All weather is good because it
is God’s.
  • St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582)
