The Yearling is certainly a classic. I never saw Where the Red Fern Grows, but I’m still not sure if I am old enough or mature enough to take it.

Unlike other people, my family doesn’t mind watching a movie that makes us cry. I don’t know why, perhaps to release some kind of pent up emotion. 🤷 But maybe because sadness is a part of the human experience. My children (all over 18 now) are all very thoughtful, sensitive and insightful with regards to people that struggle in life for whatever reason. I honestly believe that their viewing of certain movies taught them to have compassion towards others.

(I am not saying that these qualities can’t and haven’t been learned elsewhere, just that they contributed in my family.)

Jeanne, I almost added Its a beautiful Life. For me, it is one of those movies that is sad, but the message it tells is uplifting. His love for his son, his finding a way to remain positive in life despite the evil that surrounded him. Very moving.
 
One day I was doing my hour stint at Eucharistic Adoration.

And for some reason, I happened to be sad.

And I asked to be relieved of that sadness.

What popped to my mind was the “Singing in the Rain” tap dance sequence performed by Gene Kelly.

Cheered me right up.

Oh, go for it! No one else was old enough when they saw it either! 😉

Very good and very sad. It’s interesting for me, I saw it as a girl at a library screening, then I saw it as an adult and mother. It hit me completely differently.

For my list of sad movies:
  1. Au revoir les infants.
  2. A Patch of Blue. (Shelley Winter’s in this film can also be on my list of villains)
  3. The Bicycle Thief
  4. Two Women
  5. A Special Day
  6. And although there are some comedic moments in “Steel Magnolias” I just need I guess 3 boxes of tissues starting at the point where Julia Robert’s husband finds her unconscious to the end of the film.
  7. The Joy Luck Club. Also some lighter scenes, but I cry at various points. The baby scene, the scene about the twins and how they were abandoned, and the end scene.
  8. Umberto D. Also very sad. A very lonely film.

My oldest son and I watched it together. He liked it very much. I was surprised he was able to get through the subtitles and all.
 
‘Greyfriar’s Bobby’, the 1961 version (haven’t seen the more recent one).

Anyone who knows the story of the wee skye terrier who faithfully sat by the old man’s grave will understand.

Actually things turned out ok for the dog in the end. But there was one scene where the poor, sick, homeless old man was sitting in the room of a boarding house the night before he died. He was looking at the tattered Bible he kept in his pocket. He said something to the effect of ‘That’s all I’ve got in life. A book I canna read and a dog that isna mine.’

Just thinking about that has got me in tears!

Yes, it’s a lovely film, based on a true story. There is statue in memory of the dog, Bobby, near the Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh where he kept watch over his master’s grave until his own death fourteen years later. There is even a ‘Greyfriars Bobby’ pub nearby.

The 1961 film was the one I saw. There was a more recent one made but don’t think it got such good reviews. I think the old film is shown on TV occasionally, or it might be available in DVD.

This is a really good movie. I saw it years ago. 🙂

Many of the movies already mentioned are on my list, too.

I think that Hachi is probably somewhere at the top of the list of sad movies for me. I think I cried my way through that whole movie.

Hachi was emotional torture. a beautiful story, but I cried the whole last hour of the movie!

I am surprised no one has mentioned Love Story with Ali McGraw.

Brian’s Song was another sad one with James Caan.
