[This is the second part of the poll.]

I had fun with my “Catholic science fiction authors” poll, so I’m going to create another one. What is your favorite Studio Ghibli movie? A couple of points of explanation:
  1. The forums don’t allow more than 10 items in a poll. There were too many great films to reduce it down to 10, so I’m splitting it up into two groups. By luck, there are 10 films directed by Hayao Miyazaki (excluding The Castle of Cagliostro, which was not made for Studio Ghibli) and 10 other films (excluding Tales from Earthsea, which seems to be hated by pretty much everyone who has seen it, so I’m happy to leave that one out).
  2. I know it can be hard to pick just one title. Some of us have more than one favorite! So I’m being indulgent and allowing multiple choice on this poll. To keep the results meaningful, please limit yourself to three selections.

OK, and I also left out Ocean Waves. But that was made for TV, so it doesn’t really count. And besides, it hasn’t had a U.S. release (yet - that’s happening next month I think) so not many have seen it.

Of those on the list I’ve only seen ‘The Secret Life of Arietty’ so I guess that would have to get my vote.

Grave of the Fireflies was good but overrated, and doesn’t really have as much of an anti-war tone or message as Western critics have labeled it as having. Pom Poko was great but abstract. The others are all excellent as well, including Whisper of the Heart, which was the sadly the only film by the director (Yoshifumi Kondo) before he died. But I’m going with Only Yesterday, partially because I’m so glad it’s finally available in the U.S. after years of Disney sitting on it.

I went with Whisper of the Heart, but I love all Studio Ghibli movies.
