Your Funeral Music

(Dear Mod - if this is in the wrong place , please move it to the appropiate forum. I notice a lot of cantors, liturgists, organists hang out here…and am almost sure that the three stages of Catholic Mourrning may fit under the Last Rites. Wasn’t sure to put this here or in “Liturgy and Sacraments.” Again, please move if appropriate.)

I feel the need to throw out the caveat that I have no intention of harming myself or or others. I wasnt to talk about funeral music.

Say you’re lucky enough to sit down with the organist at the rectroy before/during/after the signing of your will. The ONLY restriction is that you cannot have a cantor or choir. Just music.
What is normally recommended? “On Eage’s Wings?” (Haha, I know not funny. Stop throwin’ rotten tomatoes at me!)

Please someone here
(Cantor, organist, liturgist, priest, anyone who knws) help me with the musical parts if a Funeral Mass – or a Catholic Memorial Service – where they would play music during either.

Would you kindly provide an outline of he musical parts of a Funeral Mass or memorial service held in a church? For example:

Part A is the prelude,
Part B is the procession, et cetera. This wil help with the second part of my question.

I have more questions after this, so please hang onto your hats.
 
This is a two-part question. Each question nas several branches. Ready?

It’s your funeral.

**PART A: **
Do you
a) want a Funeral Mass or
c) Memoial Service
(I don’t care which, it’s a discusion about the music ok?).

**Part B: **
If you want a full Mass Funeral, what music do you want played?
IF you are the one who will be providing the music, what will you recommend?

Part C:
You choose a funeral service i.e. memorial, what music do you want played?
IF you are the one who will be providing the music, what will you recommend?

Now, let me be fair and answer my own questions:
I would like a funeral Mass with full military honors.

All I know for sure is that I want This version of Tantum Ergo played during the Euchaist. (Vespers Hymn of Corpus Christi, IF allowed. From Pange Lingua, St.Thomas Aquinas, d.1274 / Samuel Webbe the Elder, d.1816)

Also, MANY good Catholic MIDI (songs without words) are found all over the Internet, please do not feel that the link I gave is the only example you’ll have. Just google “Catholic Midi.”

If someone has answered the question before this one, and if you choose either a Catholic Service or a full Mass, what music do you wnt played?

For example:
A. Prelude
B. Processional,
C. et cetera

I am not so sureabout the I am the Bread of Life bit.It may not be theologically sound; no one will sing it anyway. But other lyrics can be substtuted and printed up in a pamphlet very simply. …but I don’t know if any of it is appropriate. or if I have included all of the parts of the Funeral Mass/Memorial Service!

Did I count everything as far as the music goes?

And suggestions, please?:confused:

Nope, no joke at all. Not everyone who posts here is a traditionalist. We don’t have to hold up our picture of Pius XII, or X, or even V to get in here.

That is what I’d like for my funeral music, but if my survivors want something else, it’s up to them. Obviously I’ll be watching from somewhere else.

Not quite true. It’s the CHURCH’S funeral service, and it’s being bestowed on the deceased.

Not sure but I thought the “It’s your funeral” line was a reference to the scene from Oliver! rather than a statement of his perception of it.

I’ve not really thought about the music. I’d quite like a bit of flute music, maybe as the Communion hymn. Ideally I’d like ‘Flight of the Valkyries’ but I’m not sure how easy it would be to fit a symphony orchestra in the Church and there is the back story to it obviously. I suppose I could leave instructions for that to be played from the hearse as we went to the cemetery. A lone piper would be nice as well.

I think its probably a bit difficult to decide unless you have some idea who is likely to play the music. I’d rather have simpler pieces than have great music butchered for example.

Entrance of Body: “I Know that My Redeemer Liveth”

Offertory: “Oh Death, Where is Thy Sting”

Communion: “The Trumpet Will Sound” 8 minutes – there better be a lot of people there!!! 🙂

Recessional: “Worthy is the Lamb” followed by “Amen”
 
I hope to have a standard requiem Mass… many years from now (I’m still in my 30’s). The standard Gregorian chants are so beautiful, I don’t think anything else need be added.

I have directed that when the Mass is concluded and before my casket is taken to the hearse a recording of Copeland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” be played. Note that there is no “liturgical abuse” contemplated as this would occur outside the setting of the Mass.

True. We will allow secular music or recordings after the recessional with the casket. The strangest song we had at a funeral was the NY Mets theme song. Acutally they slipped that in without us knowing about it. The worst was when a man saying the words of remembrance burst out singing Jailhouse Rock. The priest was totally stunned and actually was frozen in his chair.
 
One thing I know for sure, I definatly would like everyone at the Mass to here “In Paradisum” as was sung at John Paul II’s funeral. And no i dont mean the simple version in modern english as found in Gather Hymnals. And no, sorry “Eagles wings” will not be requested;)
 
I have sung the Faure Requiem at the Requiem Mass for our beloved bishop who died of cancer. But I prefer the Durufle and would choose it for my funeral.

Given the resources. I would like the last two movements of Mahler’s Symphony #8 played and sung.

But at graveside - a piper but no Laments. A lively jig. I have always been told from the time I was little…the Irish cry when we enter this vale of tears but rejoice when we leave. And when everyone gets back to the house, I want lots of food and Tullamore Dew with my Chieftains albums as backdrop. 😃

Finding the right funeral songs is a task. It also depends on what kind of songs the person who has passed away liked. My favourite song is ‘We’ll Meet Again’ See the full lyrics at caring.com
 
I tried to evision my funeral liturgy once and picked out music for it. I was going to write it down and give it to my daughter. Then I decided that it might be better for my family if they picked what gave them the most comfort. My only requests are 1-NO EULOGY AT THE MASS (but they can do it at the funeral home), and Panis Angelicus for the Communion Hymn. Also I would like the final commendation sung by the priest. Other than that, they can sing On Eagle’s Wings to their heart’s desire.

I trust my daughter to pick out the music because she used to play in an orchestra in high school and still likes classical music and traditional hymns. Her wedding Mass was gorgeous. I trust she won’t do anything too hokey. My son is another story. He’d probably choose the Ohio State Fight Song as the recessional;)
