My grandmother, and great and great-great grandmothers all had "The Day though Gavest Lord Is Ended. I would hate to break with family tradition on that one.

I hope to have a standard requiem Mass… many years from now (I’m still in my 30’s). The standard Gregorian chants are so beautiful, I don’t think anything else need be added.

I do not really care as I will be dead, I would like some prayers offered up for the repose of my soul in the care of the Lord…

I think “bpbasil” said it well. “It’s the Church’s Service.” Personal preferences must take a back seat to what’s appropriate for Church.

Nowadays, I believe many have lost sight of what FUNERAL SERVICE is. In Church, it’s religious - not entertainment. (Sorry) Personally, I don’t think music - other than the religious - should be part of the funeral Mass. You should check with the Church in question and ask in advance if they permit music. Some do / some don’t. Some have choirs who are made available, if requested. If there’s a gravesite service, music might be appropriate there. If I had a choice, I’d pick an old hymn - “Mother, at Thy Feet is Kneeling”. Going into the Latin Liturgy, I can’t think offhand but will probably come up with something after posting this. May God have mercy on my soul when the time comes - music aside - I’m guessing my soul will be more preoccupied at that point.

I’ve told my children (but being children, I’m certain they don’t listen) that I just want them to dig a hole in the backyard and poke me in with a stick. I don’t care for fancy funeral trappings. From dust I was made, and to the dust I will return, and I’d rather like to think of my decomposing body doing some good as fertilizer.

But seeing as there probably will be a funeral of some sort…I Know That My Redeemer Liveth from Messiah.

I have directed that at my funeral, which will be a Requiem Mass, IF my children can afford to bring in the schola from a Portland church, then I want a Missa Cantata. If they can’t afford the extra 2 grand then a Requiem low Mass is great. No music is reuired. The black vestments, black Altar frontal, black candle sticks, unbleached candles, and black funeral pall are all arranged for. My son has even built my casket. Grave plots are being arrange for.
