Forgive me if im not posting this in the right place but i’ve always wondered about this.

Now i know that alot of ghost images and videos are hoaxes but i don’t think they all are, i always thought that maybe the spirit a person is seeing could be a demon in disguise or maybe God has allowed a soul from purgatory to reveal himself so we can pray for them…

I would love to hear all your thoughts on this matter, Thank you God Bless

First of all, I don’t believe neither that all images and sightings of ghosts are fake. I believe many are in fact fallen angels, appearing in an apparation to excite our fears.

Your last idea which I highlighted I in fact can agree with you also, I would not be surprised.

My mother believes that ghosts haunt her dreams for prayers, can haunt physical places, and that she can call evil spirits to plague other people. I believe that demons can plague us as they did Saint John Vianney or they can be as tricky as they appear in medieval art. As for letting souls reveal themselves, I assume you mean while they are in purgatory seeing as how they’re not getting out early without permission. I’ll just pray St. Michael does his job in casting “into hell all evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.”

I believe they are souls from purgatory who need prayers.

There is a small Museum of Purgatory in one small room of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Rome. italylogue.com/things-to-do/museum-of-purgatory.html
Our Lord dictated the following prayer to St. Gertrude the Great to release 1,000 Souls from Purgatory each time it is said.
**“Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.” **

What about stories of people who see spirits in their homes and say that it seems that they are trying to harm them? Could demons not be able to scare people?

Not only can they scare people, they can also hurt them, physically and spiritually. Any spirit that is trying to harm someone is most likely a demon.

Yes, they could be demons. Remember, evil spirits have been known to possess people and harrass saints - that’s why the Church cautions against dabbling in the occult in order to minimize contact with such spirits.

I remember i heard a story that while Padre Pio would sleep, he would wake up to voices calling his name, they were the souls from purgatory asking him to pray for them.

My friend and I always discussed Ghosts through a religious perspective, he is Orthodox and we would always say that the spirits people encounter that try to harm are most likely demons but with other stories we heard about spirits appearing to people without doing any harm or any of that would make us say where are they coming from? so i figured they were souls from purgatory who needed prayers, so from that point on i learned St. Gertrude’s parayer

St.Faustina got requests too. I’m not sure what other saints got requests from those in Purgatory?

It would make sense that the souls in purgatory may still be working out their redemption in their second life. Those who pursue evil deeds are dangerous. Since purgatory may be a place to launch further deeds to atone for sin, hell would be a place to launch deeds for the devil his master.

I believe the vast majority of ghosts are human souls in purgatory. I think Demons and Angels on Earth are much less common.

“When I asked how many demons there are, I answer with the words that the demon himself spoke through a demonic: ‘We are so many that, if we were visible, we would darken the sun.”

You believe Demons tell the truth?

I used to believe that since the Saints were in Heaven they had no business appearing here as ghosts, and that those in Hell were a little too busy being tormented, even if they could come here and appear. That left Purgatory, and I was always under the assumption that those in Purgatory could not leave it for any reason, so that was out too. Therefore my only explanation was that ghosts were of demonic origin since not one ghost story ever gave glory to God.

Now, however, after reading some things here on CAF, I believe that some souls in Purgatory could possibly appear, but unless they were asking for some sort of help through prayer it is highly unlikely. I don’t believe any inhabitant of heaven would come down to scare us with nary a message to be delivered. Most ghost sightings we hear about today don’t deliver a message and only frighten us. And some are downright violent. Therefore I still believe that the majority are demonic.

Marian apparitions, on the other hand, are an entirely different story…

You believe Demons tell the truth?
I certainly believe that Demons will tell the truth if it ultimately suits their purpose. I also believe that Demons will do good works if that also ultimately ends up separating us from God. Demons are a lot smarter than we are and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal.

What about stories of people who see spirits in their homes and say that it seems that they are trying to harm them? Could demons not be able to scare people?
Demons could, certainly. It’s very important to avoid doing anything that could attract a demon, such as messing around with the occult.

If it is actually a ghost, it cannot hurt you, nor would it try.

Aren’t you assuming purgatory to be a specific location?

I have heard theories that for some individuals the purgatory is to stay here, as spirit, and witness the suffering their sins have wrought upon others.

Although I am uncertain how much I would believe such a claim, there is a certain amount of appeal there.

I actually used to believe that - in a way. I no longer do.

Anyway, that’s neither here nor there, because I said that I was under the assumption. I’m no longer under that assumption.

However, that said, although souls from Purgatory have appeared to Saints in the past, I’m pretty sure we’re talking about ‘everyday’ type ghost occurances that you hear about all the time. I only think a small percentage of these are souls from purgatory, but of course that’s just speculation. The souls from Purgatory appeared to the Saints for a reason, so I’m assuming they would have a reason for appearing to people today as well. The average Joe who has seen a ghost, probably has no belief in Purgatory and therefore would not be able to grasp why that particular soul is appearing to him. There would be no point in such a soul appearing to someone unless they understood that the soul needs prayer. At least that’s how I see it.

I remember watching Ghost Hunters a few years ago when they went to that resort that inspired Stephen King to write “The Shining” (can’t remember the name, but it’s in Estes Park, Colorado). I was pretty freaked out by what was happening. I remember one of the crew saying that ‘spirits’ will sap the energy from a fresh battery in a matter of seconds. I remember hearing a woman laughing and talking to the men in the cellar by themselves - which was just creeped me out. I still get chills thinking about it. I also remember going to bed petrified and waking up the next morning. Something had happened to my digital wrist watch. The power completely went dead in the battery for a brief time during the night and when I woke up, the time was flashing on it like you would see on your home alarm clock when the power goes out and then comes back on. Whenever my watch battery starts to lose power, the display goes ‘wonky’ and then the watch just goes dead. This was different, the power just stopped and then came back on again. I had to re-set the time the next morning. That never happened to me previous to that or since then.

After that little incident, I vowed never to watch Ghost Hunters again. I believe it was a sign from God to stay away from that sort of stuff. They do try to encourage whatever spirits they are looking for to communicate with them, and that goes against Church teaching. I always assumed that watching the show was different than actually believing that stuff, but I now believe that even watching that stuff is bad for the soul, and is a definite occasion of sin.
