To say that the Church has gone astray because the Pope has, is to claim that the Pope is the Church.

The Church is two entities, well really three:
a) Christ
b) Her teachings
c) sinners

The Pope, who’s position is part of the Church’s teachings, but he is simply one of the sinners that make up the faithful (granted some popes have been more faithful than others). If the Pope were to teach a false doctrine, then yes, he’s taken the Church off the cliff. But if the Pope is a reprobate, without teaching false doctrines, then the Pope is a reprobate - nothing more, nothing less - But the Church remains the same.
Exactly, the Pope and the entire Magisterium of the Catholic Church has not made any false doctrines.

In fact as far as Heresy is confirm, the Bishop of Alexandria had done it Bishop Arius taught that God the Father and the Son do not co-exist eternally.

The Bishop of Antioch, Nestorius taught that Jesus exists in two persons, man the Jesus and the divine son of God.

The first known exponent of Adoptionism (another Christian heresy)in the second century is Theodotus of Byzantium.

No Bishop of Rome have agreed with any heresy like those of Nestorius or Arius.

Nella,

It seems that by not responding you have conceded that you would not bow down and worship the bread and wine used during “your” communion and therefore, you do not believe in the “body and blood” in the Eucharist as the Catholics do. You should really make sure you know what your church believes before you spout off. I say this with charity.

Well one way would be for it (the church) to become arrogant and start assuming that because we (the church) are “the pillar and foundation of truth” that we no longer need and are no longer relying upon the power of Christ and the presence of the Holy Spirit to guide us and to lead us into the truth.

I personally believe for example in response to such an arrogant attitude that the promises of Christ in regards to His church temporarily become null and void and that He will let the church drift until it repents and returns to Christ.

That applies to any body of Christian, Catholic or Protestant.

Not necessarily. “Gates of hell prevailing” is indicative of a final status. Jesus is perfectly able to fix whatever messes us humans make of what He designed.
The church founded on Peter the Rock with Bishops united to him can’t drift. We the people of the church can.
Drifting is not an option. Talk about an arrogant position.
Basically we need to establish what the church is because you don’t seem to recognize that Jesus founded one church.
Jesus said I will be with you all days even unto the end of the world. No drifting allowed. There is a reason the church is called the Barque of Peter.

We will get nowhere because I am talking about a real physical organizational church and you are talking of some conglomeration of true believers.

Check out what Luther had to say about the corruptions going on just prior to the Reformation. You will get your answer.
Luther made a lot of wild accusations, though I’ve never seen himn accuse the popes and bishops of paedophilia and rape. You claimed that the Anglicans separated from the Catholic church because Catholic popes and bishopos were committing paedophilia and rape. Obviously you have no evidence to support this absurd and outrageous allegation. Please apologise.

You mentioned that you are an ex Catholic. Could it be that you left the Church because of some sexual offence against you by a clergyman, and joined the Anglicans because they seemed “just like Catholics”? But now you have discovered that the Anglicans are full of corruption and toleration, even celebration, of sexual sins? So you’ve come here desparately trying to justify anglicanism? Of course I’m just speculating, correct me if I’m out of line.

I obviously did not express myself well because you obviously are not understanding me.

To put it simply…

Jesus founded one church. The church divided upon itself.

Jesus founded one church.
Some left it and attempted to found their own but they foundered on their own.
Is that what you meant?

Mozart has explained himself/herself very clearly. We may disagree, but it’s managed to be kept rather ecumenical (and we’re already at 40+ posts! Woo-hoo!!!).

Mozart, have you read my post #38?

Manny, Hey my military brother!!! Where HAVE you been???
