Hey you guys!
I don’t really know your (Catholic) opinion about Christian rock, punk, ska, and other alternative kinds of Christan music. I want to hear it!
without hate posts, please!
If you have a negetive opinion, please express it in a charitable and Christian way! 🙂 Thank you! 👍

God Bless~

Hi Lisa,

First of all, chill out…no one is going to flame you over christian rock.:whacky:

The closest I ever get to rock is Third Day and Mercy Me. I also like Jars of Clay, Newsboys, and Jaci Velasquez. I like Avalon also but they’re so “pop” that I can’t listen too often.

I love MercyMe, especially “I Can Only Imagine.” I like Jars of Clay, but I like their old stuff better than the new. Newsboys rock, especially their Adoration worship album. It’s really moving.

I hear you, I’m not too much a fan of pop either. I have a few exceptions, but I need to take Avalon one song at a time.

Thanks!

Hey boys and girls,
I didn’t just want to like find out if you like it or if you think it’s wrong, I also want to discuss bands/generes/songs and the like. If y’all think it’s a bad idea, just let me know!
Thanks!
Lisa

Hmm, when I think of Christian Music I usually think of things like Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Faure’s Requiem, Bach’s B Minor Mass.

But Christian rock is good to. Matter of fact I listen to it on my car radio all the time, as opposed to secular music.

But I personally wouldn’t care to hear it in church though.

I wouldn’t want to hear Christian rock in church either, but I like it when we have contemporary worship music. Not witht he drums, but it’s really nice with the piano.

I have not found any that I have liked so far. My wife listens to a lot of it so I have heard MANY different artists. I am trying to find some bands that I like and I would really like to listen to some good christian rock but they all sound like bad ripoffs of other bands or the lyrics are so hokey that I cannot stomach them.

I’ve listened to Creed, Jars of Clay, and POD.

Personal favorite is POD, but then again, I like heavy metal!

Coarse I like secular rock too…and so pretty much the christian rock I like is the stuff that holds its own with the secular market.

(I always find it funny (in a twisted kind of way) when one station I listen to plays Rob Zombie and then follows with a Creed song…I always wonder sometimes if the CDs will blow up if they get to close to each other!)

Coarse, I mostly listen to EWTN now, but not for the music…

just fyi, creed is not a Christian band. they believe in “a higher power” and scott stapp’s father is a protestant minister but that’s about as far as it goes. they have repeatedly said that they do not hold to any faith. also, they aren’t even a band anymore. stapp left (and sang a horrible version of the national anthem for one of the world series or playoff games) and the rest of the band have formed a new band (can’t remember the name of it yet).

i love rich mullins, jars of clay, switchfoot, FIF (not together anymore), and yes (i know they were a bit anti-catholic but i really liked their songs, and they are also very cheesy but still…) larry norman and keith green.

But several of thier songs are very christian, whether they like it or not…but yeah, I’ve heard all the stuff sorounding thier (ex)band…

I was just bringing them up as an example…

I’m a fan of Carman, Jill Phillips, Maire (Moya) Brennan, and there’s an odd Gary Chapman song or two that I like. Oh, and Chris Rice’s Cartoon Song.

In fact just last night I was listening to Catholic Jukebox on the radio and they played some Catholic artist’s sorry cover of Jill Phillips’ “I Am”.

Do we like any of these…NO!
Is it a bad idea…Yes!

To consider having narcotics-inspired music at a Holy Mass is wrong!

While not usually a metal fan, my newest favorite is Atomic Opera. Of the four members, one is Catholic. Their music is definately NOT for Mass (or probably even Church) has stong positive lyrics in a modern genre. My kids like it too.

My wife really likes Carmen, but I find most Christian bands are a bit too trite for my taste.

On the other hand, I’m more of a metal head when it comes to contemporary music (otherwise give me Mozart & Wagner!), and I’ve yet to find a Christian metal band that knows how to play their instruments (IMHO).

I like traditional church music, but as far as contemporary christian music, i have a staunch dislike of it. its just very strange to here words praising god, but with a lame pop tune to it. just my opinion.

I also am more into the heavy metal scene like anthrax, overkill, exodus, etc.
There is a band called Soulfly, the lead singer is a catholic revert and alot of their lyrics are very religious, but of course some are very much not. but they are really good.

Anyone hear a Chicago Band Flatfoot 56? Its at least interesting - a christian punk band with a lead bagpipe!

I can get an alternative christian station that really rocks. I don’t listen alot because I prefer other forms of music and I like only about 20% of what they play. I wish I could remember more of the performers.

Forget lyrics - cannot stand “christian rock”. Too much noise for me. Dispensing with doctrine, I like some gospel music. I love chant! 🙂

I think most of it sucks. The lyrics are insipid and the music lousy.

There are so many good ones out there
Third Day, Newsboys, OC Supertones, Caedmon’s Call, FFH, Big Daddy Weave, Mercy Me, Nicole Nordeman, Rachel Lampa, ZoeGirl, Nicole C. Mullen, Casting Crowns, DC Talk, Toby Mac, Barlow Girl,
Ginny Owens, Jennifer Knapp, Jaci Velasquez, Salvador, Joy Williams. So much to choose from… I’m not into the screaming stuff where you cant hear the words though.
