I think most of it sucks. The lyrics are insipid and the music lousy.
That’s sad. You maybe arent listening to the right stuff.

I love Christian music. It’s all I listen to. I heard someone say recently “there’s not such thing as Christian music only Christian lyrics”. 🙂

I LOVE Mattew West! I jsut got a new Barlow Girl CD and love the song “Never Alone”. I love MercyMe too and Casting Crowns.

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂

I like any good music but having been a hippie from way back I am partial to Rock. Ever hear of Rez Band out of Chicago? They were part of Jesus People USA in Chicago, & tho non-Catholic they did some great music…the one I just heard about in Immaculata Magazine is called Seven Sorrows. Two of them are M.I. (like me!) Here’s their website. www.sevensorrows.com.

Though not everything will be appropriate for a Mass… I still feel that I miss Gregorian Chant at the Eucharist…

I suppose i don’t *mind *Christian pop music in and of itself.

Unfortunately though, being a Catholic, i had to go to a Baptist school as it was the only religous school my father could afford.

I remember tunes of “and the devil can sit on a tack, sit on a tack, etc”…i kid you not.:banghead:

So the whole Baptisty music scene left a sour taste in my mouth.

I feel the same way, I love chant and I find myself listening to it quite a bit. Also, like another poster mentioned I am also fond of classical Masses. Luckily for me though, there is an indult parish about 45 minutes away, so I can occasionally go to a Sung High Mass (1962 Missal).

As for contemporary Christian music…can’t say I’m a big fan. Living in New orleans for 7 years, however, gave me an appreciation of Gospel music, but I don’t think I could ever pop in a CD and just sit there listening to it.

Switchfoot and POD are Christian? Any other mainstream ones you know of?

Learn something new every day 😃

I had a lot of Christian CD’s from one of those “12for1cent” clubs when I was in middle school. This past summer I ripped the songs I really liked to my comp so I woudln’t have to lug cd’s with me up here… here’s my list (there may only be one or two songs from some groups though… those came from compilation albums).

Jars of Clay is my FAVORITE… I’ve liked nearly everything i’ve heard from them… which is saying a whole lot since I refuse to buy cd’s because I generally don’t like more than 2 or 3 songs.

Audio Adrenaline, Bleach, DCTalk (really only liked their self titled album), Jars of Clay, Newsboys, Point of Grace, Rebecca St James, Smalltown Poets, Geoff Moore & The Distance, Considering Lily, Five Iron Frenzy, Big Tent Revival, The Waiting, Grammatrain, Skillet, Seven Day Jesus, Jennifer Knapp, Bleach, The O C Supertones, Plankeye, Reality Check, Sarah Masen, Chris Tomlin, The Insyderz, PFR, Kathy Trocolli (tends to be a little creepy) and Foxhoven Family Singers (also a little creepy).

I pick music based on the sound (as a true musician 😃 )… lyrics come secondary… and they have to be REALLY bad for me to not want to listen to it anyway. I’m notoriously bad with figuring out what they’re saying… good thing Google’s around! :rotfl:

That being said… overwhelmingly I lean towards alternative/rock, though I suppose “light rock” or something would be better suited to something like Jars of Clay? Ska’s also good. I go through phases with music though, listen to one thing over and over and over and then don’t touch it for months.

I really like Gregorian Chant, too. Not to mention classical :bounce:

Oh, and I don’t think contemporary stuff is appropriate for Mass, either. CREEPY. Not a big fan of Charismatic stuff, either… even though it’s Catholic…

Hey you guys!
I don’t really know your (Catholic) opinion about Christian rock, punk, ska, and other alternative kinds of Christan music. I want to hear it!
without hate posts, please!
If you have a negetive opinion, please express it in a charitable and Christian way! 🙂 Thank you! 👍

God Bless~
Lisa
I know you are young but one is never too young to learn some manners. Starting a thread on a Catholic forum, when you aren’t Catholic, with such an in-our-faces rude manner is not commendable behavior for a teen. Please remove the log from your own eye…

Ug. We used to regularly sing “I’ve got that joy joy joy joy down in my heart down in my heart to stay…and if the devil doesn’t like it he can sit on a tack…” as the recessional at my old (Catholic) parish. I learned to hate guitar masses that way. I sing it when I want to annoy my spouse.

Most Christian rock has seemed blah or insipid. I can’t say I have listened to a lot of it. I love chant and choral music. Beatus Vir is awesome (Vivaldi).

My favorite bands are:

Jars of Clay
DC Talk (I think they broke up 😦 )
P.O.D
Switchfoot
Pillar
MxPx

Music is subject to taste. I HATE PUNK in any flavor but my daughter likes Christian Punk. However, Christian rock is cool but my parents hated it. As long as Christ is the center…go for it.

I think that adopting such rude and one-sided opinions toward christian music is not appropriate. There are some good bands out there that many of you have mentioned already.

Don’t get me wrong, since I love Handel, Bach, and Mozart, but we can just force everybody to like that kind of music too. Although some of you may love chants and classical, that doesn’t mean that’s the case for teenagers. That’s where Christian Music comes into play, because it’s a way to reach teenagers and invite them to pray. However, I do agree I’ve listened to some stuff lately such as christian pop/punk that I’m not really into and I don’t think it shifts you on prayer mode at all. I agree that as long as the music is Christ inspired and not for commercial purposes is OK.

The Freak asked the Catholic opinion of drug-infested “music” that he/she the Freak, thinks is worth a comment.

You have a lot of GALL (or is it ignorance) to ask Catholics if they know your satanic music. One good thing, you can’t make anyone hear it.

It will do no good to tell you to grow up! You’r only showing your ignorance.

I hate all kinds of modern music. but I don’t hate those who love these modern music. modern music especially rock are noisy(personal opinion) and can’t be linked with God

I’m a hold over from the 70’s Rock Age. Chicago, Bob Seger, C C R and the like. My son, who is 11 is into Rap

Anyone know of a GOOD Catholic Christian Rap group that might appeal to an 11 year old?
