What do you think of NASA, the Shuttle, and space programs in general?

The money can be used for defense for this country instead of flying away.
Plus those under the poverty line can sure the money for food, clothing, shelter and HEALTH CARE! …and this is coming from a Republican!

The complication with this issue is that the United States does not want to be left behind with regards to space. Like it or not, we live in the valley of death, it is a place of incredible good, yet also icnredible evil and there are plenty of countries/people who would love to toss us aside. If for nothing else, we need to remain competitive in areas of technology.

But do we have the technology to find terrorists close open borders in Mexico?
What the use if the Space Shuttle is out in space and no U.S. to come back to…We could be under martial law and they’ll be up there. The only other ones up there are the Russians.

A lot of space exploration technology is transferable to “earthly” industry. Check this out:

It amazes me how much each astronauts life is valued as compared to mine. Now I am not proposing to be unsafe, but nowhere else do we spend so much per person as we do on shuttle safety. Each astronaut knows the risks.

Carol,
I understand ALL that but if this country does not stand up to these terrorists what use will the ‘technology of tomorrow’ do for us today?

We are in a ‘new kind of war’ where only a Few derranged persons can cause civilization to a screeching halt. I’m just concerned about what kind of life we will lead in the next 10 years than something that may take after my life is over. In a tongue and cheek way, it has been said that WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones!

The only reason the shuttle is in the news at all right now is so the the media doesn’t have to talk about the terrorist attacks in London.

Yes.
Tiles have been reported to have fallen off a few days ago and a windhield cover did the same thing. Just makes one wonder how long those shuttles will last…I think they are already over 15 years old!

I must disagree with you in this case.

Any money saved by doing away with NASA and the Space Program will be wasted just as the majority of our tax money is thrown in the garbage.

As if ending NASA and the Space Program would do anything about our open borders. Apples and oranges Edwin.

I still don’t understand why people want the government to spend more money on health care. Before Uncle Sam stuck his nose in the medical business, people could afford doctors. Heck, when my parrents were kids doctors still made house calls.

Everything the governemt touches gets bigger, uglier, more expensive, and less efficient.

David,
I NEVER thought I would find something to disagree with you about…or at least question.
WIth the current state of the world, I’m just more concerned about what is happening. Sure 20 years ago, I was all excited about the Space Program. Times are changing.
Why not take ‘that wasted money’ for other programs other than NASA and place them in the line of defense.

Here in Cleveland was have a NASA recearch facility and the fight is on to try to keep it open…even with the new budget that was settled upon, there are cutbacks in the Space Program.
President Bush’s BIGGEST concern is to protect and defend the U.S. and the Space Program, important as it is, is not going to change things all that much…unless they launch satellites that will help find terrorists and suitcase nukes.

What’s the definition of “crazy”? Doing the same thing over-and-over but expecting different results everytime. I don’t think we’ll ever learn.

The space program is a good investment in the future with respect to jobs, research and keeping our foot in the next great frontier. We must continue to press on this front as economics and national defense will benefit from our knowledge and mastery over this domain. I can think of much better things to cut anyway.

Planned Parenthood, for one…but let’s stay on topic.

On this issue, I can bend. I’m just concerned about future generations who may be living in fear. That’s All plain and simple.
I’m sorry if I have caused some people to be upset over my view.

edwin,

I don’t think it is a matter of “either or,” I think it is a matter of doing both.

NASA ORIGINS:
Born of the extraordinary accomplishments of 20th century physics, astronomy, geology, and biology, the Origins program takes up the challenge of answering questions as old as our species.
Haven’t they read Genesis?
NASA ORIGINS:
When Galileo first turned his tiny telescope to the night sky, he saw the Milky Way resolved into millions of stars, in one stroke expanding our grasp of the universe to a scale that had not been imagined from the sight of eyes alone.
Ah, one of their gods.
NASA ORIGINS:
The growth of scientific culture and tools over the next three centuries revealed a vast realm, each at-first-incomprehensible discovery assimilated into an increasingly uncomfortable reality. The eruptive growth of 20th century astronomy has brought us an appreciation of how vast, old, and unearthly the universe is, and has left humanity struggling for a sense of our own significance consistent with the reality of who and what we are.
Haven’t they read the Bible? Our significance is in being created in the image of God Himself.
NASA ORIGINS:
But science has also given us something that will help, by promising answers to our ancient questions: Where did we come from? Are we alone?
These questions are answered. God created us, we are not alone.
NASA ORIGINS:
When the answers to these questions are known, our civilizations will evolve new visions of who we are and what our futures might be.
Are they saying “we will become like gods?”
NASA ORIGINS:
Already we have learned enough to appreciate that the universe is enormous and ancient, but lifehttp://origins.jpl.nasa.gov/images/en-dash.jpgtiny and transienthttp://origins.jpl.nasa.gov/images/en-dash.jpgis its precious jewel.
Ah, now the universe is god! How Carl Sagan-ish.

This is not science, folks, this is religion- and it ain’t ours.

The desire to explore space has brought about many changes in our world. Just a few are better, smaller, faster computers. Cell phones would not exist if we did not have a space program. All electronics have gotten better and smaller. I remember when a pocket calculator cost $25 and all it did was add, subtract, multiply and devide. Remember when a transistor radio cost a day’s pay and was about the size of a large paperback novel?

Sure there is waste in NASA, just as there is waste in any government program. We don’t stop welfare just because a few people abuse the food stamp program or shut down Medicare because some schmuck figured a way to get them to pay for his Viagra.

I am not against science or the space program overall. Actually I like the space shuttle. I do not like the religous overtones of much of space exploration.

I remember when a hand held calculator cost $75+. My first one was one of the first affordable calculators on the market. It was not an HP, but ran in reverse polish. This made it cost competitive. My parents bought it for me for my birthday so I do not know what it cost (probably < $20). I think this was about 1975. My dad had a still slide rule (from college).

I believe that the more we discover about our origins and the begining of the universe the more we will prove the existance of God.
