I would like for EVERYONE to comment and give their opinion based off of what you know about the Book of Revelation and a few verses in particular. Please don’t look something up and copy and paste, or suddenly change your opinion. I’m just curious to know what people think about these things from their own point of view.

Revelation 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Revelation 20:25 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

Also, the 144,000 spoken of in Revelation.

TruthSeeker, there’s a sub-forum in the apologetics area of CAF specifically for Scriptural discussions. You may get better feedback over there…

Just an average girl’s opinion… it’s very mysterious, almost sounding like a puzzle. Most prophecies, maybe all prophecies, are never really recognized or understood until after they happen. So I don’t think we could ever know what this means.

I take Revelation as a bit of hope for times of persecution. Since we will not ever know the hour of the coming of Christ, and that even the angels don’t know, I’d say to always be ready (like Advent reminds us:D) and not worry about it.

Hi Truth Seeker. The Antichrist’s number/name is somehow associated with the infamous 666. It is not readily apparent from the passage in what way those who live during this time will understand, but it seems that it would have been/will be for those who refuse to receive the mark of the beast. I am open to mutliple interpretations that allow for both future and past fulfillments. I lean towards the future.

“Him that hath understanding” will be able to identify the beast, and so doing, will refuse to take the mark and will be excluded from public trade.

It has been a long time and I would need to consult other books to be able to thoroughly explain why I lean towards amillenialism. I don’t think about this stuff much at all anymore. But I take a thousand years very loosely to mean a long time. The Lord “owns the cattle on a thousand hills”…and also the 1001st. There is a precedent in Scripture for non-literal understandings of “a thousand” to mean much or many.

I tend toward allegorical as opposed to literal interpretations of most of the apocalyptic literature. For example, I believe it is Is. 13 or somewhere near to it that it speaks of the stars and the heavens being shaken, but the literal fulfillment was the fall of ancient Babylon or maybe it was Assyria. Angels have been associated with the nations, the prince of Persia who resisted Daniel’s (ch. 11?) angel comes to mind. So, I don’t think these are stars made up of hydrogen and helium and firey gases, but rather perhaps the angels assigned to those nations, and a falling star can represent the fall of a government. An event which would seem to be compatible with the advent of the anti-Christ.

But I wouldn’t argue about it. Other than forms of milennarianism condemned by the Church, I am very open-minded. I could be preterist or futurist or both. It isn’t quite clear at this time. A good argument in favor finding ways to interpret these events of being at least partially fulfilled is found in the first verse of the first chapter where it says this vision of St. John is of things which “must shortly come to pass”. And verse 3, where it says “the time is at hand”.

However, no one in my opinion can successfully place the entire book in the past. The descriptions of the first resurrection, the lake of fire, and the second death, the great judgment seem to argue for future fulfillments as well.

Heh…I didn’t see the 144,000.

Again, a number very symbolic for 12 times 12,000. The children of Jacob, the Jews are apparently going to receive their Messiah in great numbers. I don’t think each tribe has exactly 12,000 converts. They don’t even identify themselves according to tribe anymore do they? I think it is a number which expresses a huge movement of God’s Spirit among the Jewish people of at least 144,000, but not limited to that number.

Well, first of all, as Catholics, we place confidence in the Scripture as written and the Traditions that trace their origins back to Christ and his Apostles. Our opinion is not nearly as important as how the Catechism of the Catholic Church interprest the Word. This is an important doctrinal difference between Catholics and non-Catholics. So, here goes.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the “Mark of the Beast” is the image of Ceaser on the coin of the realm. It was impossible to trade or sell without the use of the coin.

The number of the Beast has been largely blown up through popular movies and books that have obscured the more obvious interpretation. Again, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, this passage has to do with Jewish “gematria”. It is a cipher used by the writer to conceal the real name intended. The number is a human number. A cipher replaces letters with numericl equivalents. Each letter in the Hebrew alphabet corresponds to a number. When we convert the number 666, it comes out as Nero Ceaser. Nero began the persecution of the Church.

I think I covered the problematic interpretation of Rev. 20 in a previous post. The Catholic Church interprest Rev. 20 symbolically. We reject Premillenialism. We do not accept that Christ will appear, then a reign of a thousand years will ensue and then he will render judgement. We are Amillenialists. We are currently in the thousand year period where Christ is reigning in heaven with the Saints and through the Church here on earth.

Finally, the 144,000 refers to the Jews. 12,000 from each tribe. However, I know many non-catholics believe that this is the total number that will be saved. The very next verse say that there were a multitude that could not be counted from every nation. So, I think that while Jews may be limited in how many may be saved, though I hope not, there is ample room for the rest of us.

Buying and selling refers to the dispensation of grace.
The understanding refers to how God dispences grace.
The rest of the dead refers to those that died without recieving the mark.
144,000 is I believe a symbolic number inteanded to display how few would not recieve the mark.

Exactly what is the mark of the beast. It is the Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
Exactly what is the name of God that is written on the true believers… The Holy Spirit.
