I feel the same way. 5 really narrows the field.

Actually, The Gods Must Be Crazy is from South Africa, not Hollywood.
Used to be one of my favorites, but I watched it last year and the humor and sparkling story seemed to have faded. Same thing happened with Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972) directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Really a zinger for me for a number of years, but seems not have stood up to the test of time.

Wonderful, can I second this list of wonderful films. Leave her to Heaven is just amazing, I have just ordered the DVD!

Splendor, I wish I had thought of that one.

Perhaps someone could have put Sound of Music as a selection as well. It’s not easy to do it always off the top of head.

Schindler’s List
The Lord of the Rings (I saw all three in a row in the theatre, on the day Return of the King was released, so I’m counting it as one movie :p)
12 Angry Men

glad you like my picks. I had Leave Her to Heaven on VHS. I need to purchase the DVD. I love this movie!
 
The original Star Wars trilogy - would vote just Empire Strikes Back, but it’s really one big awesome story

Lord of the Rings Trilogy- again, vote would be for Fellowship, but it’s all one big story.

Dracula (1931) - pure classic. If I swapped this out, it would be for Karloff’s Mummy.

Passion of the Christ. I’ve never walked out of a theater with a silent crowd before.

The Illusionist (Edward Norton/Jessica Biel). Morally flawed story, but masterfully told.

Kingdom of Heaven (directors cut). Not historically the most accurate, but gave a wonderful narrative on the period in history I enjoy most.

Honorable mention: The Lion King. Hakuna matata!

I’ll replace number four with “Song of Bernadette”, it really is a great movie. Everyone’s selections are such classics. And “Gladiator”, that one too.
