I just want to know some things that other people do to deepen their faith life!

As for me, I live in south Louisiana so when a hurricane comes I take my Sacred Heart, Infant jesus, Our lady fo Grace, our lady of promt succor, our lady of perpetual help, fr. seelos relic, and jesus icon and set up a “Hurricane Prayer Shrine” in my living room. It is a place where my family can gather before, during and after a hurricane. I tape the name of the storm on it. It is set yp right now due to Hurricanes Gustav and Hannah.

So now you guys can share yours!!!

A pious custom I have practiced is with my brown scapular. At nights, before I go to bed, I touch my scapular to the crucifix in the form of the Cross (I touch the Crown of Thorns, then His Feet, then His Hands), then hold the scapular at Our Lord’s side wound for a few moments, and then I cross myself with the scapular in turn.

That interesting! I never heard of that before! i have my small Mary icon by my computer right now.

Besides the daily plan of piety (Consagration, Holy Rosary, Mass, 15 minutes of mental prayer, etc.) I also go weekly to confession, and I try to do a small “romaria” (don’t know how it’s called in english), which it is a small visitation to a nearby statue of icon of Our Lady.

Over time I have collected quite a few glow in the dark rosaries, statues and a crucifix.Sounds kinda corny…but each night I “re-charge” them under the little lamp by my bed. They glow for a long time and are comforting to gaze at while I say my last prayers of the day.

On top of my wooden radio stand (it’s a vertical kitchen pantry on wheels), there a bible stand that holds the NAB open and upright. In front of it is a statue of St. Joseph holding the Baby Jesus. Next to both is a votive candle–which color changes with the liturgical season.

Tonight, I’ll pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy for you and all along the Gulf Coast. I’ll tune in to WWL AM 870 to listen on the evac ops in your home state.

Peace

Joe

This is turning out to be a happy little corner here.🙂 Below are the Holy Child and St. Ann with little Mary. The other is Our Lady of Victory at my kitchen window.

The pious practices I’ve retained from childhood are common to all. Bowing my head at the Name of Jesus. Bowing my head as I pass a Catholic Church.Kissing my crucifix when putting it on and taking it off. Everyone does these things, yes?

For one it’s far more common to cross oneself (as I do) than to bow upon passing a Church. For another I don’t see why, apart from bowing your head at Jesus’ name (after all scripture does say that at the name of Jesus each knee should bend), you should either think that ‘everyone does these things’ (you just need to open your eyes to see that not everyone does) or, as you seem to be insinuating, that everyone should do them either.

People have different ways of expressing their spirituality and, apart from those acts of public worship like Mass, where our behaviour is specified for us, should pretty much be left alone to do as they wish.

Lily,I agree!
The OP was asking about little special things that people do to deepen their faith.I understand that to mean:What do we do that is above and beyond our USUAL practices?

I collect antiques especially Catholic antiques of every sort.My house is like a mini-museum of art and artifact. It’s something I do for myself and is a great conversation starter for visitors of all faiths. But in my earlier post I listed my little collection of glow in the dark items…now that’s my special little thing that’s between me and Our Lord.

I do all those things, at least.

Oh my goodness. I was insinuating nothing, I promise! I guess I was speaking more to those of my own generation who were raised in the States. I meant no offense (or dictate) to anyone.

Does anyone else like to create little shrines in their home? I’d like to see what all others have done. My goodness, we’ve got them all over the place here. They bless me.🙂

No I have not done so yet but I plan to.

What I do a lot is just say, “my Lord, my God, my Jesus, my Saviour” over and over again.

I talk to God in my heart. I have never been able to be silent and wait upon the Lord although I would love to be able to do that.

I am too much of a chatter box. The Lord is used to me by now. 🙂
