Hello the recent thread on the LA Catholic station got me wondering what others thought of Catholic radio.

I’m in Michigan and am fortunate to have Sirius XM in my car. I listen when I can. I like both the Catholic Channel and EWTN’s channel for different reasons and feel fortunate that when one is just not my cup of tea, the other can usually fit the bill.

I like Al Kresta and Teresa Tomeo because they are local to me, although Teresa can sometimes be a little too single-issue for me. I’d like to hear about other aspects of the faith than just the pro-life message. She also tends to interrupt her guests at times, though I think her show is generally excellent.

On the other hand, Gus Lloyd on Seize the Day can spend five minutes or more leading up to a topic before actually getting to the topic – by that time I’m home and unloading groceries and not able to listen.

My favorites (mostly from EWTN are Father John Riccardo (brilliant, compelling and local to me), Dr. Ray Guarendi (always a hoot) and Catholic Answers Live. Don’t care much for Greg and Lisa Popcak (sp?) (too many psychobabble buzzwords and occasionally too giddy).

While the Catholic Channel can have good stuff from time to time, I have a hard time with Broken Halo and similar shows – there’s one presenter (don’t know his name but I believe he is a priest) who has a long, irritating cackle which he uses often and about nothing at all or about something that seems uncharitable about his colleagues.

Overall, though, I do like both venues and feel blessed to have them.
Don’t know why I had to share my two cents. Yours?

As luck would have it I live in a town where EWTN is on free radio. I’m a supporter and I’m fortunate that we have it as a resource. I’m not around during the day but I try to listen at least to the Rosary at night and sometimes the Sunday morning Mass.

Catholic radio was an accidental and pleasant discovery for me.

It was about a year after becoming a Catholic that I was on a business drive near Ft. Wayne, Indiana, when I was scanning the radio dial and found someone speaking in Catholic terms (most radio ministries were easily different in tone).

I learned later this was Redeemer Radio out of Fort Wayne. At the time they were affiliated with the Relevant Radio network (now they are EWTN). The first apologist I ever heard had this Southern drawl in 1 minute Q&A soundbites that piqued my curiosity.

I learned later the voice and the source: John Martignoni of the Bible Christian Society, also an EWTN “Open Line” host and CAL guest apologist. I owe him a coffee and many blessings.

I became a “radio-active Catholic” right away, locating a new Indianapolis Catholic radio station, grabbing podcasts of CAL and enriching my faith immensely.

I also found, on other trips where I had Sirius XM in the car, “The Catholic Channel.” Like you, I did find their topics or reverence a bit off-putting sometimes. But I enjoyed “The Busted Halo Radio Show” for its youthful zeal. I prefer EWTN because of their attention to the finer points of the faith, where some Catholic Channel shows tend to show a certain cultural liberalism that doesn’t seem to jibe with Church teaching or leaves some questionable implications.

The latest Cool Thing was the Son Rise Morning Show, broadcast down the road from me in Cincinnati.

I’m ready not only to share my faith but arm any Catholic who’s not aware of the existence of Catholic radio with a lot of information on where and what to find to nourish their faith.

EWTN, my local Catholic radio and CA are my anchor during Lent.

I used to listen quite regularly several years ago, but stopped because I find most of the programs and speakers irritating.

I considered giving examples but don’t want to come across as uncharitable or put down specific speakers and shows that others find edifying.

Suffice it to say that I found several of the most popular shows becoming more and more like commercial talk radio. Way too much time spent on giving the phone number to a call in show 20 times when they only ever get round to 3 calls after commercial breaks, etc. or the speakers loving to hear their own voice more than imparting information.

Shows that promote Catholicism and Christianity I enjoyed much more than those that bash on Protestantism, and there seemed to be more and more of that.

There were two hosts on CAL that I really respect and enjoy and I sometimes still try to catch them. Again, they speak about Catholicism, waste NO time or energy making fun of or making disparaging remarks about other faiths, don’t seem to love the sound of their own voice, and move the show along intelligently and informatively.

Also, where I live EWTN is only on AM band and the interference level of electric wires etc is so bad that when I am in the car (which is about the only time I have the radio on) all I hear is squealing and buzzing half the time.

I also love Mother Angelica…for keeping it real!

Up here in New England we have free Catholic radio and I love it, I enjoy Kresta in the afternoon and Catholic Answers live.

I listen to the Catholic Channel in small bits. I’m glad to have it, but it’s not something I can listen to for more than a few minutes at a time.

Interestingly enough, although I live in Sandy Eggo county, both 1000 and 930 are viable on my car radio. Listen on KCEO as it is usually stronger. Occasionally listen to KBRT, which is Christian but not Catholic.

I generally find Catholic Radio helpful, and essentially listen daily during my 45-60 minute commute up I-5.

There are some occasions when the “opinons” get in the way of the Message, but, of course, that’s my opinion. I will turn it off when the program climbs onto a soap box, which occasionally happens. I find this to happen less on Catholic Radio than on KBRT, for instance.

Catholic radio provides us Catholics, and non Catholics a way of better realizing our Faith, so it helps us become nearer to Christ.

Blessings,
Stephie

I listen to Gus Lloyd on the way to work, and while I’ve grown to realize that he is solid as a rock in his faith and character (he handles difficult callers wonderfully), he can get a bit long winded. He repeats himself repeatedly 😃

The laugh on Busted Halo is annoying to me, too.

Have you heard The Catholic Guy with Lino Rulli? People either love him or hate him. HIs show is very different!

Dr. Ray has always been one of my favorites for his wit and great advise. Catholic Answers is very informative, but now that Patrick Madrid has his own longer program, he is edging closer to my top choice. His coverage of current events is amazing. 😃

I love the late Fr. Groeschel. Fr. Larry is hilarious. I also like Fr. Mitch Pacwa.

I love Catholic Radio. I listen everyday and sometimes on the weekends.

I work from home so I usually have EWTN on my phone in my ear…lol

As my faith has grown I have changed from one show to another. I absolutely love Fr John Riccardo and I listen to the Fathers of Mercy Hour, Al Kresta and Catholic Answers Live.

I have learned so much over the past few years. I also find myself wanting to listen to this over regular secular programming as I don’t have to guard my listening. Not nearly as negative as talk radio (all politics, yuck) and popular music is a hit or miss anymore.

There are three different am stations with Immaculate Heart radio around here, and we will switch between them when driving when the signal from one gets weak. We love listening to it, especially the call in shows and the rosary. We also watch ewtn on television regularly. We only get the radio stations in the car, but it’s an hour drive to town from here.

@Little Mary:

Thanks for correcting me (the one time “Busted” is actually correct over “Broken”! ;D)

Also thanks for reminding me about The Catholic Guy show – I have that show and “BUSTED” Halo mixed together in my mind. If I am on the road and one or the other is on, I try to listen but I’m just as likely to turn it off. (Which one has the irritating laugher?)

Sorry if my comments are uncharitable. Didn’t really think of it in that way before and really, what does it matter what I think anyway? Mea culpa!

Regarding the exaggerated laugh, I believe it’s one of the people on Busted Halo. I’m all for humor, but not everything is that funny. Especially on that show, where even most of the good jokes are relatively stale.

God bless those guys, but I think they are really missing the mark. I tune in every now and then because I believe in their mission, but how they do it invariably seems to me to be another hackneyed attempt at being hip. IMO, if you want to reach the young or the disenfranchised, then just be dynamic and positive and directly speak to those audiences.

I am hit an miss. I listen to what is on, which due to my schedule is Lino Rulli quite a bit. I do not love or hate him. I am entertained and occasionally learn something. True, he is a Yankee, but no one is perfect. At least he finally learned how to pronounce New Orleans this week.

Haha! I didn’t notice you’d written “broken” instead of “busted” now I’m not sure which it is. Anyway, I think that’s the guy with the laugh. He just laughs far too often, it doesn’t seem genuine.

I’m like you, I’ll listen if I’m interested in the topic of conversation, otherwise, I’m likely to turn it off.

I don’t think our comments are uncharitable…at least they are not meant to be. Just sharing opinions over radio shows. Overall, I’m happy to have Catholic radio and God bless everyone who works to keep it on the air, whether it’s satellite or local.

🙂

👍:rotfl:

I listen and learn from most of it. Only one program I REFUSE to listen to. I find him offensive and condesceding.

Great idea for a thread and may St. Gabriel the Archangel look over all those with ministry in Catholic Radio. I listen nearly exclusively to Catholic radio and am blessed to have local stations that live truth.

Whatever show I am listening to the most joy I uncover is when I hear a witness to the power of conversion that radio makes. The witness of people who have come home to the church from a secular life just by catching a glimpse of The Gospel, on air, is an amazing testimony. I wish more “cradle catholics” would hear and realize the power of the truth of Jesus upon our lives.

Jesus works in mysterious ways and I am just glad airwaves are a part of His mystery.

I used to listen to Catholic Radio when driving. They had a daily live Mass (worship service) being broadcast from a local large church. This was followed by the daily Novena to the Divine Mercy. This was the schedule for that time period.

The station cancelled both the Mass and the Novena to broadcast two more daily anti-abortion programs. The station was (is) clogged to the gills with anti-abortion programs, but they suddenly wanted to add two more. I already made up my mind, thankyouverymuch. And probably so did everyone else with that station on their car radio preset.

They lost a listener that day. I want to hear about the Savior and the Scripture and parables and prayers and the Spirit-moveth-whithersoever-it-will and the nature of God. But they cut all that. :tsktsk:

I suppose for people who can’t get enough of a subject they appreciate, my reaction may not make sense. Let me translate. It’s like the barrage/monomania/preaching to the converted among the local Rapturists. Or, lately, the political news. :stretcher:

(Please do not take this as bashing CR. I just needed a break … for as long as they’re still doing it.)
