A priest at a church I attend will come off of the altar for homilies and has been known to ask when preaching, “Can I hear an AMEN!” I think it’s great.
I will admit, I am quite a traditionalist regarding the liturgy in the Roman Rite, yet is not such an action that you have described in violation of what’s stipulated in the GIRM? I have seen nothing from the Vatican that would sanction such a behavior.
