I hope you won’t be grievously accepted if I prefer not to take your word from it.

Apologetics aside, we know that Mohammed commanded dozens of military raids, attacks and expeditions from Medina alone, hardly seemly behaviour for a religious leader to a Western mind, especially one that places such an emphasis on “peace”. We know that he executed members of the Quarayza tribe in front of their families, who were then sold into slavery. As well, the precedent is set for the destruction of civilian material assets by sura 59:5:

“Whatever you [believers] may have done to [their] palm trees—cutting them down or leaving them standing on their roots—was done by God’s leave [permission], so that He might disgrace those who defied Him.”

All in all, I think most observers could be forgiven for displaying some skepticism over the inherent peacefulness of Islam.
