I’ve talked about quotes on some forums, and would like to participate here. So here are 3 quotes I want your opinion on:

1.) The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

2.) Don’t judge a book by its cover.

3.) If there’s a will, there’s a way.

4.) Peace if possible, truth at all costs.

That’s 4 quotes, actually. 😉

1.) The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

That’s probably true to the extent that your enemy’s enemy doesn’t have any reasons to be your enemy as well. At the very least, you’d have a common enemy in common, so there’d be at least some reason for friendship, though it’s probably not one of the best reasons.

2.) Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Very true. Applies to people as well as books. 🙂 Stereotyping in either case usually ends up being mistaken. Old books that are falling apart often have interesting content.

3.) If there’s a will, there’s a way.

All things are possible with God.

4.) Peace if possible, truth at all costs.

No. If someone lies to me and refuses to admit it, I won’t attack. I promise. I do think truth is more important than peace, however. I’d rather worship God and live where I am than live in a utopia that worships some idol. But…it sort of depends on which truth and in what way you’re pursuing it, and what level of peace.

Does it matter which {3} of these quotes I look at?

I do that all the time…😛

1.) My enemy’s enemy may only have that in common. He may want me dead, too, so it is not a safe assumption.

2.) Sometimes, that is all we have. However, that does not mean that we cannot reserve final judgement.

3.) Sure. Keep thinking that one. Sooner or later, the wall is too thick. This one always reminds me of the Charge of the Light Brigade. They had the will and determination…

4.) That is a good one, as long as we stay charitable in how we present the truth. Being truthful does not mean that we must be mean.

  1. Actually, I have found that I can judge many books just by looking at thier covers. Romance novels look one way, Mysteries another - there’s a lot of clues to the inside of a book by just looking at its cover!

Here are my own views.
  1. Just because the enemy of my enemy may share a common enemy, that could be just it. World War II is a good example. The enemy (Russia) of my enemy (Germany) is my friend. During that time we were not friends with Russia, because we do not support Communism.
  2. I find this one to be true and false. When I first went to middle school, I tried to tell what people were like before I knew them. However, this task was hard, so in cases like these, we can’t judge people that way. But there are some cases where the person’s outside reflect their inside. Such examples would be a goth.
  3. I find that we can do almost anything with true faith in God. I think “impossible” is just something that isn’t possible for the average Joe.
  4. I find this the most true out of all four quotes. Peace is always a nice thing. However, it is not as important as the truth.

1.) The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
But what if the enemy of your enemy is Satan?
2.) Don’t judge a book by its cover.
But what if the title of the book is “You Can Judge Me By My Cover”?
3.) If there’s a will, there’s a way.
But what if you will to not die?
4.) Peace if possible, truth at all costs.
Luckily for us men, Jesus acheived both on the Cross 😉

Were you in school when the New Math was in the ascendancy, 116_Reformed?

He achieved peace on the cross? Why is there so much dispute about what is correct and what is wrong? Why is there an “Non-Catholic Religions” if we all agree?

Ever heard of a typo?

And you sort of ignored the quotes…

But what if the enemy of your enemy is Satan?
Then Satan is my friend.
But what if the title of the book is “You Can Judge Me By My Cover”?
We’re Catholic, since when do we let a book tell us what to do?
But what if you will to not die?
Let’s find out, shall we?

You really are trying to make this harder than it actually is.

not a good litmus test for a friend. It assumes you can only disagree/argue/fight concerning one issue. Now two people who agree on one thing and decide to put aside other differences can always get together to fight someone who disagrees with them both. But, that doesn’t mean they agree on everything.

Biblically, we should not be conspiring against someone who considers us our enemy. We should love them. So maybe the quote should be “My enemy and my enemies enemy are my friends” 😃

2.) Don’t judge a book by its cover.

True

3.) If there’s a will, there’s a way.

No way dude. I don’t agree with this. Obviously will can help us to succeed in some cases like pushing ourselves to do well in school so we can get a good job, but what about pushing ourselves to physically fit into a 4 inch by 4 inch by 4 inch box, no matter how much will we have there is no way.
4.) Peace if possible, truth at all costs.

Sure, I suppose.

Change number 3 to “If it’s His will, there’s a way” and I’m completely on board 👍

Apart from that though, if God is determined that something won’t happen then well…good luck with that 😛

Darn! You beat me to it - “thy Will be done…” We are in the hands of God and need to listen to that still small voice. Our wills mean very little in God’s plans for us.

As for #4 - I don’t think the truth at all times. Sometimes it is better not to be too blunt. In the case of something really important, yes, the truth comes first, but for little things, try to forgive and keep the peace.

No, really, I often just browse through the library or bookstores, and the cover of the book will attract me or repel me or leave me neutral, and upon opening the book and reading it, I find that my instincts were right.

As for people, I have often been wrong by my first impression. So I don’t judge people by thier appearances, but books - yes!🙂

Why is there so much dispute about what is correct and what is wrong? Why is there an “Non-Catholic Religions” if we all agree?
Because of logic, we can say that if two ideas contradict each other, one has to be right, and one wrong. If I said “This grass is purple” and you said, “The grass is green”, one of us would be wrong. Both of us can’t be correct. And we’re all given the want to seek the truth, and I guess some people get mis-told, misinterpret things, and get this other “truth.” So we don’t all agree. There are some things that Catholics and “Non-Catholic Religions” dispute on. For example, the sacrament of reconciliation. The common misconception that 1 Timothy 2:5 “There is one mediator between God and Man, the man is Jesus Christ” disproves the sacrament was a misinterpretation. We’re all called to share in the redemptive mission with every Christian, correct? Christ is the creator of the universe, but he also shares the creative role with men and women in birth. Also, Peter wrote that Christ was the “Chief Shepherd”, implying that there are more shepherds. In conclusion, there are also people who share in the healing of sins that Christ has appointed, Priests.

Sorry it was so long, 😊 but I had to get what I wanted to say in.

Hope I helped!
Zach

IMO no quote is a quote unless a citation and source are given

some other tag lines I have seen which I also question

“There are no stupid questions.”
we regularly break that rule here
