Evangelical Lutheran? What does that mean?
The term “Evangelical” has different meanings in different languages. In English it is the name given to a certain tendency within Protestantism, without identifying any single Protestant church. But in German, for instance, it is simply a synonym for “Lutheran”. Die evangelische Kirche is the Lutheran Church. Maybe in Swedish it’s the same. You live in Sweden, you must know!

I always try to respect other peoples religions, even if I disagree with them. If I disrespect another faith then I have to keep my mouth shut when someone disrespects mine. That doesn’t mean I agree with them of course.

Svenska kyrkan uses several names in English. Sometimes it is Church of Sweden and other times it is Evangelical Lutheran Church. Sometimes they say that they are an Evangelical Lutheran church.

I agree it is strange that other religions call their religious leaders priests, but it’s just the way it is. I would not worry about it too much, since you know what they are as such.
If you are learning music there it is bound to happen as others say, it’s fine to do so in such a place (much like learning it in a secular place), just a word of caution if you are learning hymns to watch out for heresies. Some protestant hymns contain beliefs that are contrary to our faith and are heretical or border on it. As music is so beautiful and the lyrics can be so subjective it can be a little difficult to decide unless you are a theologian so best bet is to stick to one’s that also feature in our hymn books. Just for you to think about/be aware of.

I guess it is a tricky question of ownership as King Gustav Vasa during the 16th century, claimed ownership of all church buildings and monasteries and their assets, to be able to pay a debt to the Hansa in Lübeck (Northern Germany). The communal (civil) and ecclesial borders were one and the same and the Church of Sweden was responsible for the registry of the population with births, deaths, marriages etc until the 1990s. I guess that church buildings were just “recorded” as property of the church when the split between the state and church happened.

Church bells were recast into canon balls (30 year war in Europe). The altar piece Christ taken down from the cross, which was made out of 13? kilos of silver, in the Dominican convent in Stockholm was confiscated. The walls, made of brick, were taken down and used for building the castle Mariefred among other things. Pretty much all of the churches were affected in one way or the other.

If you ever come to Sweden I’ll take you on a guided tour. 😅

Some day the Lutheran church will come home but until then, learn to play the organ and be courteous.
Is Julmust out yet? Oh, what an awful drink!

Julmust is being sold in the shops now and I agree that is awful. One small can is enough for me for the whole year but it needs to be a special brand.

Any examples?
I have never seen a Swedish hymn with heresy. Might be easier to find in English.

Forget Julmust. Mumma is way better.

Well no offence but I know nothing about Swedish stuff I was speaking generally, sorry for the confusion. I thought you said you weren’t in Sweden?? I’m confused.

I’m not a musician I’ve just heard it discussed before that’s all, it is common sense as the religions differ on fairly major issues (transubstantiation for one). So you can google it just like me but here’s a couple of links I found. If you are in Sweden or wanting in Swedish you’d be best put to look yourself I am just saying watch what you sing… even Amazing grace has one ‘borderline’ line though it’s not considered major - I can’t remember which one it is but it hints at being saved by grace alone. Still that’s sung in our churches even though very seldom and it wasn’t when I was a child.

Here’s the links

The Lutheran “church” is indeed empty and fake. Stay with the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church that we proclaim in the Nicene Creed. Do NOT allow your soul to be bullied into calling someone a “priest” who is not a priest.
