Youth explosion

I’m new to this and new to this charasmatic church. But I am havinf a hard time with an event my 14 yr old daughter attended on Saturday. She attended a youth explosion from 9 in the morning till after 10:00 that evening, her youth minister did not let the children phone home or recieve calls all-day, I found that a bit unusual being that, that is MY child. My daughter said at one point at this event they put the kids in a dimmed room and had the REST, as to recieve the holy spirit and fall over and speak in tongues. I have never heard of this, I thought it was rare that a person would speak in tongues. And of course no one knew what anyone of them was saying, no one could interpet was coming out of those kids mouths. My daughter found it very scary at one point. I’ve been a catholic all my life even went to catholic school and just need some guidance on this please. thanks TS

RUN AND RUN VERY FAST from the charismatic movement. It comes to us from pentacostal protestantism. If my child had not called me by mid morning I would have kicked the doors in and led her out by hand. The charismatic movment bases faith on “the Experience of the moment” it cultivates a sense of needing to be entertained with worship. it has a cultish element to it as well.
 
Did you talk with the youth minister or director or the pastor or the priest regarding the lack of phone calls and contact BEFORE the “youth explosion” or did you get this from your daughter? I ask because I raised two now-adult children, and some of the things I’ve heard from kids about what is supposed to happen at a youth event, and what is really supposed to happen are two different things- or sometimes three or four different things.

That said, if you are concerned, and you have every right to be concerned, you should immediately and with much haste make an appointment with your pastor or the person acting as yuouth director ASAP. Ask a lot of questions.If you don’t like the answer you receive after you talk with the pastor, or if the youth director is evasive, then please contact the chancery and go from there. What you describe does not meet the norms in my diocese for Protecting All God’s Children.
 
Thank you so much for your reply, and yes the no phone contact came directly from the youth minister, that is why I am a little concerned, I do have plans to contact the parrish father and go from there. Again, thank you for your advise. TS

What, exactly, doesn’t meet the norms of Protecting God’s Children?

Did you check that this group/church is oked by the diocese?

There is a Catholic Charismatic renewal with approved programs in each diocese.

As a parent you need to be proactive - being reactive does not work.
 
Been involved in a few youth retreats. There is a “no cell phone” rule. I am usually the adult who sits there as the kids come to the event and takes the cell phones from them, puts them in a secure place until after the event.

The parents do have the cell number of the youth minister, and the kids are welcome to use the phones of the adult volunteers should they need to check in at home. When you take your child to the event, talk to the adults in charge - they will be happy to explain the rules and work with you to keep your kids happy and safe.

That being said, the idea of everyone “speaking in toungues” sounds odd and I agree that needs to go to the Priest.
 
It is odd that the OP opens with being new to some charismatic church.

Is it even a Catholic parish/Catholic event or retreat?

Any program that does not give you full information is a program to avoid at all costs - be it for youth or adults.

We belong to a Catholic church, what I menat is “being new to this forum” and being new to this charismatic church. I have never ever heard of it until now. I’m sorry if I worded things wrong for you mam’, this a youth group of kids that are making their confimation in May, and their youth minister decieded they should go to this youth explosion, so we paid 40.00 so that our kids could attend and have no communication with their own parents for 13 hours, my daughter is only 14. I don’t believe that our father knows exaclty ehat went on there, but I do have every intention of speaking with him Thanks TS
 
this sounds very Assembly of God’ish, I remember when I was in high school some kids from the assembly church asking me to come to a retreat where this stuff went on. Now as an adult I can see why my parents were upset. I know it sounds strange for an assembly person to be a youth minister at a catholic church, but when I was in my last year of CYA my instructor was indeed a member of the AOG. She was very insistent with us when we questioned what she was “trying” to teach us about the Catholic church, she had a lot of things to say that were in direct conflict with what the church teaches.
 
Quite apart from propriety, and the approved vs. non-approved, I feel that one should be cautious when introducing children to charismatic services and speaking in tongues . Some people really may speak in tongues, but it’s very possible that people, and particularly children, are prone to merely babbling something without meaning and thinking that it is tongues. Probably a good reason why St. Paul says there should be interpreters. I’m not saying this to be critical, but because in my (Protestant) youth I was dragged to a lot of “house meetings” where people jumped and spoke in tongues. I also spoke in “tongues” but now I feel that I was happily rolling my tongue and speaking nonsense.

Approved makes a major difference - and would very probably include all the concerns you raise re speaking/praying in tongues as well as know that the youth protection guidelines called for are in place.

From what the OP posted at the start it is not even identified as Catholic - checking for approval would at the very least shown if it was or not.

Why in the world did you let your child go??

Are you moving from being Catholic to not being Catholic?
 
No mam’, I am very much a devout Catholic and plan to stay that way and raise both my children as so, both my children attend catholic schools and the school they attend is in connection with the parrish, ccd , and the youth minister, it’d my fault that i did not really look into this, all the information we recieved was that it was a highly recommended event, it wasn’t till after the event that my daughter brought home a pamplet that stated it was the charasmatic church. I guess I just trusted her youth ministers and thought they had my daughters best interest at heart. Maybe they did, I’m just confused as to what is right and wrong, I grew up old school and bring my children up as so. So, we don’t get it.

Her ‘youth ministers’ are with the Catholic church?

We have a youth group but the adults working with it are not called ‘youth ministers’.
 
I’m sorry I meant the kids that they teach, the youth ministers are in age range from about 30 to 40
