I watch news clips regularly on youtube, and I have been trying to find out if posting news clips is copyright infringement. Does anybody know? It probably is copyright infringement I found out, but positing a news clip and putting your own commentary below the video in the description could make it fair use apparently.

Copyright law needs to be reformed. Fair use, Copyright law of 1976 and Digital Millennium Copyright Act were enacted before youtube. We are trying to navigate youtube using laws that are perhaps not made to deal with this age of posting online videos.😊

Has anybody got responses from Catholic apologists or Priests on moral culpability of those that watched youtube videos that they know commit copyright infringement?

I spoke to my priest about this in somewhat vague terms during a confession (i.e. I didn’t mention Youtube specifically), and he sort of suggested that other areas of my life would be a better place to focus my thoughts and energies.

I don’t interpret that as a free pass to do what I like, but it didn’t come off as condemnation, either. What I really took away from it was, there are better ways to spend my time than on Youtube :D.

You could say this about most things. 🤷

Abyssinia- I don’t know of any responses like that, but if you do find something, please post it. I’d like to hear it.

I don’t know if you’re comfortable just :shrug:ing off what your priest suggests in confession, but I plan to give it serious consideration. “Better ways” doesn’t even have to imply anything more than just better entertainments to pursue.

I look at it like this: If you think an entertainment is morally questionable, find another one. There are so many options out there that give no pause whatsoever, I find myself wondering why I waste time trying to toe the moral line with the questionable ones.

Makes sense. I guess I was thinking that it was kind of obvious that there were better ways of spending one’s time, and that this was true of a lot of activities. It doesn’t automatically mean that we shouldn’t spend time on them.

For me personally, I tend to think everything is morally questionable to some degree. For me, it was important to learn that at sometimes you have to shrug and say “It’s probably OK.” But not everyone is like that. You have to know yourself, and I’m sure the priest knows you better than I do. His advice was intended for you specifically, and I think it’s good that you’re taking that seriously. 👍

My priest is generally like “we are all sinners, stop worrying about things.” Because I’m a worrier. :o

I had spoken about this with my Bishop before. He had told me that it isn’t clearly defined yet as immoral or a sin. I don’t think they have really discussed this kind of thing because it is so different from a clear and cut steal. When you watch a video on youtube, you aren’t really stealing it because it isn’t being downloaded although some information may be stored it is usually removed just as quickly. Even the laws of the country are not so clear cut on this either. The laws are very clear on downloading illegal stuff or using P2P to download and distribute to others illegal stuff but not so much on streaming and not downloadin/distributing.

I honestly don’t know if it is really “immoral”. I will talk to my priest about it as I spoke to the Bishop about it over a year ago, possibly almost 2 years ago.

Also, epiclotus you completely misinterpreted that court case, it did not say that it was stealing. It said that streaming a movie is no different from going into a book store, taking a book and reading it all. It didn’t mean leaving with the book. Also, sneaking into a movie without paying and watching a movie is not stealing. It may be breaking some other law but definitely not theft. Although I doubt any person would really be arrested for such a thing which again would probably not necessarily make it immoral.
