Yesterday, I posted a reply on another thread regarding chanting the Eucharistic Prayer. A fellow poster included a link to a Youtube video in which the priest sings a Eucharistic Prayer setting by Marty Haugen. Here is the link. I couldn’t believe my eyes or my ears! Everything about it seemed wrong - musical accompaniment (all instruments are to be silent for the E.P.), I’m quite sure that the text is not an approved text from the missal, the congregation are assigned numerous responses where there shouldn’t be any (as well as the usual ones), the priest failed to genuflect at the consecration. The list goes on - overall it seemed like a concert performance rather than a Eucharistic celebration. I certainly wouldn’t have guessed that it was the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday night, if it weren’t stated on the Youtube page. I can’t see how the priest could have been giving his attention to the Mass when he’s looking at the musical score constantly as well as “conducting” the congregation.
Unfortunately, I didn’t stop at that video, and later came across another one - here. I’m sure there are many more besides this, and one can be sure that such Masses are far more widespread than Youtube might suggest. I’ve heard priests change the odd word of the canon here and there - which itself is unacceptable - but I’ve never seen such ad lib-ing as this celebrant does. Waving hands in the air at “For the kingdom the power and the glory…”. Breaking the sacred Host at the moment of consecration. No genuflection. The old holding hands during the Pater Noster. The choir in the sanctuary just seems wrong - again, in my opinion, it turns the whole thing into a concert-like performance. The list goes on.
I haven’t really got a specific question, but would love to hear what you think. Is this as bad as it gets at this most solemn part of the Holy Mass? I’m not saying we don’t have liturgical abuses in Ireland, but these videos really take the biscuit - I hope these “Spirit of Vatican II” innovations are kept well at bay. I wonder has anyone here ever addressed these kinds of abuses to the clergy concerned, or the bishop? Were there any positive results? Surely our bishops can’t be supporting this kind of liturgy - should we be alerting them to incidents (I mean those of us who are outside of the dioceses concerned)? Anyone, perchance, think these are great liturgies? Why?
Anyway, as I say, this was mostly a rant (which you know by now I’m quite good at
), but I really would love to hear any responses. Thanks.
