Is watching videos on youtube any immoral?

Things to consider= music, etc.😃

I clicked Somentimes.

Not Sinful:

When the video is posted by a person who has made it themselves and is not immoral in content.

When the Record Company themselves have posted the video (which most are doing these days).

When a television company has posted their own videos (which many do now too).

Sinful:

Video is pornographic in nature or extremely violent.

Mind you, I am of two minds about the whole illegal downloading of music/videos thing so I’m not going to comment on that. But there are certainly some circumstances where watching YouTube is clearly not sinful and some where it is.

Those of you who just said Yes need to actually think about it a little before you give opinions. I watch many good shows that are produced especially for YouTube and are used with permission etc.

As far as professional media is concerned, I believe that Google is now paying licensing fees with various media companies. Maybe not all, but much of what is posted is done so according to agreement, or at least fair use standards.
Previously entire programs were being uploaded. Given that, I’m not worried about the legal nature of the content.

As far as the sinfulness of YouTube. It’s like anything else, really. Youtube can be used for good or bad and from what I can tell it’s used for both. It’s all in what you do with it. I would advise caution as there is a lot of hatred, pornography and gratuitous violence. Most here probably wouldn’t want to become immersed in that but not everyone is so cautious over what they watch, nor do they always watch it with the proper attitude.

Yep! I watch YouTube - Saint Michael’s Media has dozens of clips out there - check them out! šŸ‘

Just like anything in this world, it can be used for good or for evil. It’s what you do with it that matters. If you don’t want to see things you would consider to be evil - DON’T SEARCH FOR THEM, DON’T CLICK ON THEM. It’s really quite simple.

Yes, absolutely EVERYTHING on Youtube is EVIL… it’s just like TELEVISION. Or not. I usually only watch it for music videos. And I tend to only listen to those. But yea, most of the stuff on there is okay content-wise. It just depends on the video if it’s sinful or not.

What is the difference between the ā€œYesā€ answer and the ā€œSometimesā€ answer? Surely those clicking ā€œyesā€ do not mean that the spend 24 hours a day watching YouTube or that they watch every posted video! Is ā€œSometimesā€ really substituting for ā€œsome videosā€?

You might as well ask –

Is listening to music immoral?

Is watching television immoral?

Is reading books immoral?

And so on.

Similar to all of the above, watching videos on YouTube is morally neutral. Whether the activity is immoral or not depends on the content of the media.

I watched a few youtube videos last Wednesday, they were of Trappist nuns chanting the liturgy of the hours.

Confusing poll.
Title of the poll is ā€˜do you watch youtube?’ and
the question asked below is about the morality
of watching. So, which is it?

I voted of course not, (it being immoral) and yes,
I do watch youtube. I use it primarily to see
fave artists concert clips and videos, and to check
out new artists that I may want to buy.

Depends on what you watch, and why, as to the
morality of it, IMO.

Youtube is not much different than the variety of content exhibited on this forum. It’s our ability to discern what value something has for our spiritual growth that determines whether or not these diverse platforms are O.K. …teachccd šŸ™‚

I voted no because I have only watched YouTube once or twice. The reason being that I am on dial-up.

You Tube is neither good nor evil; moral or immoral… it is a service… we can choose to use it for whatever purpose we decide. There are some beautiful you tube videos of the TLM for example.

I may be wrong, but in my thinking:

a ā€˜yes’ vote is for someone who actively visits youtube and searches out content on a regular basis; has the site bookmarked and probably also has an account (if for no other reason than to leave comments)

a ā€˜sometimes’ vote is for someone who tends to visit only when someone posts a link on a forum (and may view some ā€˜related content’); does not have the site bookmarked and is more likely to answer ā€˜x times a month’ than ā€˜x times a week’ if asked how often.

Morality of youtube is squarely in the ā€˜it depends’ column. It completely depends on the sort of content one looks for. As long as the uploader has the rights to do so (and I believe youtube does remove any content they’re told about that isn’t in that category–but because they’re so big, they rely on user reports of inappropriate content), there’s nothing wrong w/ watching a video on youtube unless the content of the video itself is morally problematic.

And yes, if I were on dial-up, I’d never watch it either.

Oops!

Have pity on me please! I didn’t mean the question to be utterly ambiguous…LOL!

Anyways, i think my question is more on the morality of youtube. I mean, forgive my modest, but i am a soccer player, and like most soccer players, i tend to watch a LOT soccer videos on youtube, in which other soccer players compile amazing videos about their favorite stars…you know. Anyway, i used to watch, then stopped for sometime, and then started again, and now i’ve halted because i don’t exactly know the legality of it. I mean, for most ā€˜neutral’ videos, i presume it a okay, however, when it comes to ā€˜music’ videos, what do you say? I mean, not actually ā€˜watching’ but just listening… You see, this more or less drags it into the context of ā€˜file-sharing’ and such…

Anyway, it is my greatest hope that you are enjoying the Holidays!

My Sisters & Brothers, I most humbly bow to the voices of your opinions!

😃 šŸ‘

Yay! 😃 Okay, now I watched YouTube videos - iPhone, glow sticks and Guitar Hero III…they all blend! šŸ‘
I saw the iPhone and Guitar Hero III but I missed the glowsticks.
Hold on, I’ll be right backā€¦šŸ˜ƒ

I believe watching u-tube is alright. But yes it does depends on the videos. If one feel the video is imorral don’t watch it. I watch it sometimes

I said no but I have watched a couple of videos; I’ve just followed links that I have found reading through posts on here. I think one was Fr Corapi and another the TLM.
