One thing: the game was not invented with ‘Satanism’ in mind; heck, the creator is not even Christian or someone from the West!

Another thing: That card is fake, judging from the poor grammar, and the label ‘Demon’ (they are known as ‘Fiend’-type Monster Cards in the US Cards).
Yup— I mentioned before that I collect the boots, partly due to their ‘Engrish,’ partly due to their strange characters.

Heh… I find this thread really ridiculous.

What? As a YGO fan, I can honestly tell you that there is no such card as “Demon with dark power to tempt your mind, very proud of the power.” I mean, sure, there’s things like Call of the Haunted, Wandering Mummy, Fiend Comedian, Dark Armed Dragon, and Yamata Dragon, but that’s about as bad as it gets. And look at Kuriboh, Watapon, Marshmallon, Petit Angel, St. Joan, Soul of Purity and Light, Dark Magician Girl (mentioned earlier in the thread), Neo-Parshath the Sky Paladin, Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys… the list goes on and on. One of the most successful decks in the world right now revolves around LIGHT monsters (more info here). Tell me they’re bad influences.
You should have mentioned Caius and Dark Ruler Ha Des. I do not consider DAD to be satanic in any way.

I watched Yu-Gi-Oh! 5ds and I feel sorry for Red Daemon’s Dragon. I am sure that will be censored in the same way that Ha Des was.

Over-reaction much?

It’s a card game! When you’re younger you find it additictive! It’s not evil and it not try and stear your childs heart towards Satan!

I don’t know anything about yu-gi-oh specifically, but regarding the whole Japanese anime thing, I think the jury is still out for me.

This stuff seems like crack for kids. My daughter got into a group that became obsessed over Japanese anime - TV, comic books, etc. They all insisted it was harmless, and even defended it to the point of tears. (BTW, I wish my daughter would defend her faith with 1/100th of the passion that she defended anime.) Anyway after a year or so of this, when she, a previous “A” student, brought home 4 “F"s I laid down the law, cut off the TV and computer, and nixed the anime. She collapsed into a heap, crying, and said she wanted to die. When I went into her bedroom and found a 6” layer of trash on the floor, with several 100’s (no kidding) of self-drawn anime pictures, it was time to call a good priest. The following weeks were really enlightening, but that’s another story.

Call it what you want. But when a person defends an activity like this to the degree that an alcoholic defends their booze, IMO you better start thinking about its real effects and nature.

But yeah, I’m over 40, so what do I know? (A: A lot more than I wish I knew.)

What was that layer of trash and how long had it been there? Just curious.

It would be nice if they would be as passionate about the faith. Have to wonder why.

Just what is it with Western kids and this ultra-obsession that some have with anime?

People in Japan don’t give that much attention to anime since it is basically, a common thing and is taken for granted. That’s not to say there are the obsessed types (the term ‘otaku’ has a more negative connotation in Japan than in the West, as it is used in the sense of ‘anorak’ or something here).

Hi Sailor K,

Don’t want to hijack the thread, but to answer your question - Mostly paper, old homework assignments and many clothes, with empty pop cans, lots of etc. (DW is a bit “organizationally impaired” and hardly ever patrols the kids’ rooms. I cleaned up this room 1 1/2 years ago, told her to keep it clean, and hoped the desire for a clean room would “kick in”, but obviously it didn’t.)

Anime is no longer in the house, and she’s doing better. I’m not sure I can say that the two are cause-and-effect related, but I think there is at least some sort of relationship component. Of course, confessions, two healing masses and a house blessing didn’t hurt either.

I shredded all my 600 cards:D

I feel much better that I dont have to look at skulls and evil monsters anymore.

Actually our bishop gave a sermon recently on the dangers of anime - inmorality of pictures and stories, degrading women, turning young girls into sex objects and the obsession ssome people have with them. He warned parents in particular about the morality or lack of morality of some of the drawings and story lines found in anime aimed at young children. He explained that he had been shocked when his grand-nieces (aged 8 and 11) had shown him their favourite anime. Apparently it was designed for pre-teen girls and had a story about a girl and her boyfriend which showed pictures of the two of them in her bedroom lying on the bed. He found similar stories in other editions.

Sheer foolishness.

You might as well say that books are immoral, since some of them are pornographic and violent.

Or paintings. Burn them all!

Or the internet. One of the biggest purveyors of porn in the world.

If so, what are you doing here online?

Anime is merely a medium, not a message. Learn the difference.

And greenpatrick, you should have given the cards to me.

hahaha very funny:D

The whole point of HP, YGO, and of course Pokemon (which is much lighter and more comical) is battling the forces of darkness.
That and you must always use your dueling skills for good and never hurt people! 8D

Even though I myself tend to be very ruthless when playing. Beware noobs, you will all be easily crushed by the mighty powah of my Dragon’s Rage deck! Mwahahahahahahahahah!!! >8D

dog whistles Oh Horus!!! Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8!?!?! (With an ATK of 3000 and the ability to nullify all Spell Cards at my slightest whim. Oh what a wonderful pet! XD)

By the way, some guy here mentioned a site where you can duel online and I’ve actually tried it. I’m still having trouble connecting though. 😊

The Black Flame Dragon? Does Hiei know his pet is missing? 😉

Pff… this Hiei is merely a copycat of the very common techniques held by Dragon monster specialists, such as myself. 😛

He didn’t say all anime, just some. The same with books, TV programmes, movies etc. He did warn that because anime is so common here that people have becone less sensitive to certain images which he thinks (his personal opinion) have become more immoral with time. It was the images seen in the anime aimed at children that really shocked him.
He has also given sermons on the immorality seen in popular movies, books etc.

The fault of that does not necessarily rest on the anime but on the person viewing it. Some anime may have images that maybe considered ‘immoral’ at first glance but many people make the mistake of not looking deeper into the image’s context. Take for example, the image you cited about about a boy and girl lying on the same bed. Now to the mind of someone still sexually immature, of course that could send the wrong messages. But to someone older like me, I see a scene portraying a typical romance between a boy and a girl (note: you didn’t specify if they were nude btw so I assume they weren’t). It really depends on the viewer’s interpretation. Many authors use things such as intense fights or draw somewhat highly intimate moments between characters to amplify the emotion in them.

Here’s one example, you see a very intense fight scene with wild explosions and two characters exchanging all manner of intense attacks, but when you realize why the characters are fighting (e.g. the two characters are actually best friends but one was slowly falling away to the side of evil) The drama kind of reduces the all the violence to the background.

Another example would be the passionate kissing scenes found in some romance manga. My mother practically shakes her head when she sees such scenes, but she doesn’t see that usually before such scenes, there was actually a very emotional and climactic moment in the story (e.g. a boy finally realizes his feelings for a certain girl and musters up the courage to confess/admit his feelings before its too late) This kiss simply becomes the cherry on top to end a nice love story.

Although there are indeed manga and anime that cross the line (coughdoujincoughhentaicough) those are usually considered Restricted so either the grandkids of your priests were actually breaking some serious rules or it could be he was just overreacting (no offense :o ). I’ve often heard quite a few times about how some Japanese (Catholic or not) are complaining of ‘declining morality’ in their country. Your priest may have a point but then again, he could be just following a trend of thinking.
