I am aware that Zakat, or charitable giving is one of the pillars of islam and there are eight categories of people who may receive the collected Zakat:
In Christian countries I think there would be equal amounts, if not more, given to a muslim country than to a Christian country. In fact the US gives a lot of aid money to countries who celebrate our misfortune and who want us destroyed.
I think it is easy to love someone similar to you or someone who likes you (even criminals like other criminals), but it seems like it would be more noble to give aid to your enemy. I think someone important said something like this once.
So please educate me on the complicated concept of Zakat. Thanks!
- Poor people (if they do not have enough to cover their basic needs)
- The Destitute (those with no property or income at all)
- The Collectors
- People Whose Hearts are to be Reconciled (Normally new Muslims or those close to becoming Muslim. Even non-muslims could be included)
- Freeing Slaves
- Debtors (to help those heavily indebted with paying their debts)
- In the Way of Allah (Running Islamic Schools, Hospitals, Mosques and many other charity works)
Travellers (who find themselves in difficult circumstances)
