I am aware that Zakat, or charitable giving is one of the pillars of islam and there are eight categories of people who may receive the collected Zakat:
  1. Poor people (if they do not have enough to cover their basic needs)
  2. The Destitute (those with no property or income at all)
  3. The Collectors
  4. People Whose Hearts are to be Reconciled (Normally new Muslims or those close to becoming Muslim. Even non-muslims could be included)
  5. Freeing Slaves
  6. Debtors (to help those heavily indebted with paying their debts)
  7. In the Way of Allah (Running Islamic Schools, Hospitals, Mosques and many other charity works)
Travellers (who find themselves in difficult circumstances)
    (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zakat)
I have read reports that when disaster strikes a muslim country (Tsunami or Pakistan earthquake) relatively little aid comes from muslims countries and the majority of aid comes from Christian countries. Why is this? If Charitable giving is at the core of islam it seems like there should be an outpouring of aid from muslim countries. I have even heard muslim clerics explain this by saying the people should not be helped becasue the disaster is punishment from Allah for thier sins. Is this correct? Why isn’t there equal emphasis on giving to non-muslims?

In Christian countries I think there would be equal amounts, if not more, given to a muslim country than to a Christian country. In fact the US gives a lot of aid money to countries who celebrate our misfortune and who want us destroyed.

I think it is easy to love someone similar to you or someone who likes you (even criminals like other criminals), but it seems like it would be more noble to give aid to your enemy. I think someone important said something like this once.

So please educate me on the complicated concept of Zakat. Thanks!

Actually the country that gave the most aid after the Pakistan earthquake wasn’t a Christian country, it was Turkey, by a long long way. And after that’s it’s the USA, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

But regardless, do you not think that maybe the reason some Christian countries make very large donations is because those countries have more money to give? Sure the USA, the UK, Canada and such countries give very large amounts, but you don’t see much coming from the just as Christian countries of South America and sub-Saharan Africa do you? Is that because the Christians there are all heartless? Or is the more obvious answer that they don’t have the money or the resources to send much aid. And most Muslim countries are also very poor.

And Muslims do not believe disasters are a punishment for people’s sins, that’s a Hindu belief. We believe they are tests, for the person strucken with disaster, and also for the people around them (do they go to their aid? Or do nothing).

This is an old article but it shows the amounts given by the various countries. Note how some muslim organizations upped thier donations after a story ran on their stinginess.

How much aid from muslim countries goes to non-muslim countries. Compare this to the aid the US gives to the Palestinians and the two mentioned disasters. US government gives $10bln a year. This is in addition to over $130 billion a year that individual US citizens and organizations give in forign aid. I am just wondering what is the record of muslim countries. It seems if Zakat is central to islam muslim countries should be more charitable, esp to non-muslims.

*An interview with Sheik Fawzan Al-Fawzan, a professor at the Al-Imam University where he says that these tsunami’s are Allah’s judgment for homosexuality and fornication. In an interview on MEMRI-TV (MIddle East Media Research Institute), the Sheik said this:

These great tragedies and collective punishments that are wiping out villages, towns, cities, and even entire countries, are Allah’s punishments of the people of these countries, even if they are Muslims.

Some of our forefathers said that if there is usury and fornication in a certain village, Allah permits its destruction. We know that at these resorts, which unfortunately exist in Islamic and other countries in South Asia, and especially at Christmas, fornication and sexual perversion of all kinds are rampant. The fact that it happened at this particular time is a sign from Allah. It happened at Christmas, when fornicators and corrupt people from all over the world come to commit fornication and sexual perversion. That’s when this tragedy took place, striking them all and destroyed everything. It turned the land into wasteland, where only the cries of the ravens are heard. I say this is a great sign and punishment on which Muslims should reflect.

All that’s left for us to do is to ask for forgiveness We must atone for our sins, and for the acts of the stupid people among us and improve our condition. We must fight fornication, homosexuality, usury, fight the corruption on the face of the earth, and the disregard of the lives of protected people.*

"Where are the Arabs?
One does not get an impression that Arabs are benevolent people. They have billions of dollars. But most monies go to build palaces and printing free Quran booklets. None goes into other worthy causes. Most of the destruction has happened in a Muslim country of Indonesia. Still a paltry sum has been promised by Arab Kingdoms. They should remember that all their oil wealth passes thru the narrow straits of Indonesia and Singapore. Indonesia’s lack of co-operation in movement of this commerce will jeopardize their wealth. You state the largest donor was muslim Turkey then you say the reason aid does not come from muslim countries is because they are poor. There are several muslim countries much richer than Turkey (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, etc). Seems like your argument fails here.

Actually Turkey has the largest economy of any Muslim country, larger than that of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE combined.

You are correct. Modern secular Turkey has a GDP of 400bl to Saudia Arabia’s 300bln. Does that explain the discrepancy between muslim charity vs western charity in regards to foreign aid.

If you look at the Gross National Income (GNI), the money each citizen has to spend, modern secular Turkey is at the bottom of the list and is out ranked by several other muslim countries. These other countries would have more disposable income. Why less foriegn aid then? If Saudi Arabia is a more devout muslim country they (or Qatar even) would have given the most given these facts.

**My dear friend, I don’t want you to feel that me and my brother are joining forces against you but the most important point of Islamic charity or Zakat as you understood it even though Zakat is not a Charity but one of the pillars of Islam is that a Muslim is not expected to make announcement of how much he or she paid in Sakat or even charity.

Just to clarify that to you…!**

I wouldn’t blow your horn too loudly about western charity. Often what we pledge and what we provide are two different things.

Yes what we give is often less than we pledge, but my point is that the muslim countries do not even pledge that much; esp not to non-muslims.
