"Zechariah 5:9" - female angel?

God, Who is also a spirit, has made it clear in the Bible that His gender is male.
How? God is metaphorically the “Father”, which is a masculine identification, but also metaphorically the “Rock”, which is entirely genderless. The usage of masculine pronouns is merely a default of the source language, and thus demonstrates nothing. To complicate matters yet further, God is identified in feminine fashions in Dt 32:18, Job 38:29, Is 42:14, 46:3, 66:13, Hos 13:8, Mt 23:37, Lk 13:21, 34, and 1 Pe 2:2-3.

God is Spirit, and cannot be accurately reduced to masculinity.

Reduced to masculinity?
If masculine gender is an attribute of God (and He Himself reveals that it is, in holy Scripture) then He is by no means “reduced” by it. Rather, masculinity as it is seen in His creation is a reflection of His masculine character, and it could be even be said that compared to Him, everything else is “feminine”.

Nice.

…it’s an old movie based on Dante’s writings (I think); the title is Constantine with Rachel Weisz and Keanu Reeves–Tilda Swinton, as Gabriel.

…I agree that the Bible employs the male gender in most revelations… my question is, is this accidental or incidental?

Keanu Reeves? Forget it. In my opinion, he can’t act his way out of a wet paper bag. Getting back on track, I believe it is incidental.

Whoa. 😛

And BTW Constantine is based on the comic Hellblazer. It probably doesn’t have anything to do with medieval poet Dante Alighieri or his Divine Comedy.

…correct… it is only incidentally that Yahweh God is personified in the male role/gender… the Second Person of the Holy Trinity is the only Person of God that actually took on the human form and He chose to be male… which demonstrates that the accidental Incarnation was congruent with the incidental persona: “Son.”

…at the Son’s, Jesus, Parousia we will all change (1 Corinthians 15:50-54)… and as Jesus stated we will be as (similar to) the angels–while it is understood that we will still exist in our human gender but will no longer be tied to the inherent sexuality of our temporal bodies… the angels, as fully spiritual beings, are beyond sexual compulsion… but I do not see, from Scriptures, any emphasis placed on their appearance: masculine vs. feminine.

…I thought it might since there are several scenes played out where hell and earth are intertwined… and there’s that Catholic spin! …but I never read anything that I do not need to (I had to look up the info on the net and did not go beyond the names of the three main characters)…

…would the comic bood be based on Dante’s, do you know?

But they can take on human appearance, varying in genders it would seem. How that happens I don’t know.

…since the angels are spiritual beings they can morph into temporal “molds.” …remember some of the passages involving possessions?..two instances that I recall are St. Mark 5:8-10 and St. Matthew 12:43-45–in both cases there are more than one evil spirit in possession of one human body (or animals, as in the case of the pigs)… we are warned about not frequenting diviners (spiritist) since, as Forest Gump would say, ‘you never know what you might get…’ (demons pretending to be people or the spirits of departed loved ones…); how free angels and demons are to mimicking people… don’t know!

I understand what you are saying but isn’t it different to inhabit a body as opposed to creating a body. For example would an angel inhabit a living human being and make him/her do things to please God (the opposite of what a demon spirit would do) or could the angel create something that looks like a human, but that human doesn’t really exist?

I say that because sacred scripture writes about the possibility of angels being strangers. Interesting points you bring up and a fascinating topic to me.

That ain’t no woman, it’s a nuclear bomb. HINT: lead topper. They are building a nuclear base for their imported Russian-derived Korean missile. Our Lady of the Rosary’s prophecy of Russia kicking our bums comes true again. Russia sold nuclear materials to Iran outright in May, 2004.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, reign and rule and protect us! Thanks.

…since we have free will, I doubt that angels freely inhabit humans, even if it were to help them reject evil and embrace good… otherwise man would cease doing wicked and damaging things… my example was to demonstrate how wicked (fallen) angels use their power to possess people (and animals) and since they are spiritual beings more than one can inhabit a single body… so this coupled with other passages where it is given us to know that God has full power to violate (disregard/suspend) natural law, it would not be surprising that angels, who themselves are very powerful spiritual beings, would morph or project into a human-like creature… ie: the Archangel Raphael lived among humans projecting a human man as he assisted Tobit’s son, Tobias.

…and you are correct, we are warned to treat foreigners/strangers with respect/kindness since many have unknowingly hosted/befriended angels…

So if it seems highly improbable that an angel would inhabit a free willed human, then they must turn into a human like appearance on earth as “strangers”. That would mean that they have the ability to go from a spirit form (a spirit hath not flesh and bones) to a humanoid form. Whether that humanoid is completely intact with real flesh and bones during that morphing process is to me unknown.

Some scholars believe the woman in the basket to be representative of the Statue of Liberty, which was brought to the United States from France on board sailing ships (the “women” with “wings”) in a basket-like packing case, and set on a pedestal on Liberty Island in much the same way that an idol would have been erected in Zechariah’s time.
They maintain that the United States has become the Babylon of our time, and point out that liberty can also be seen as license or lawlessness, depending upon one’s point of view; and, whether or not one agrees that the US is Babylon, there are plenty of people in this country who DO worship “liberty” and “freedom”, to the point where they consider themselves to be Americans first and Christians second.

Yes, reduced to masculinity. As already pointed out, Scripture represents God not only in masculine but also in feminine fashions. To ignore those, and only see part of the picture, is thus to reduce the representation of God
Rather, masculinity as it is seen in His creation is a reflection of His masculine character, and it could be even be said that compared to Him, everything else is “feminine”.
Such could only be said if one imagined femininity to be inherently inferior to masculinity.

…correct; there’s no way of knowing if the spiritual beings also influence the temporal plane or just the environment directly in their presence (making us see the angels as a humans who eat and sleep just as we do) or, given their power, angels could well just emulate us without actually consuming nutrients or feeling cold or heat… but simply going through the motions that would be expected of them if they were in an actual human form.

…I also find little tidbits interesting… such as stones morphing into full human beings:
and do not presume to tell yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father,” because, I tell you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones. (St. Matthew 3:9)
…talk about spirit power!

…only one addition: not “Americans” but “liberators,” such as females being liberated to enjoy life (the ability to take on multiple partners without the punishment of children and stds)… oh, and the great health liberation where women do not need to fear dying from conceiving and giving birth to full-term children!

…they made a movie on this vain about a decade or so ago: v for vendetta or am I thinking of the libertine?

Hi, What would this verse be talking about since not female angels? Please send me a good catholic link if you have one about this verse, so to share with a friend who said it might be a female angel.

Maybe those two women are demons with wings? Not sure…

Zechariah 5:9
Angels and demons are not gendered, and do not have physical bodies. As pure spiritual beings they might appear as male or female, but cannot be categorized according to our limited physical understanding.

God contains all of what we as humans categorize as genders. In the beginning he created male and female in His own image and likeness, which means that genders reflect in each of them aspects of God.

Since we are talking about gender. I believe all men and women are equal before God, but have different roles within the Church and in the familial household.

Being that most scriptures in the masculine refer to God and or Angels, i was confused by the Zechariah 5:9 verse, which at first most people would think is referring to female angels. I wasn’t sure if there was an official Catholic Church teaching on it or not. If there is, please let me know.

I am not sure what this verse means, but when reading through it again, I saw it mentions ANGELS! This is a surprise, since i don’t remember reading that!!!
A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. - 1 Corinthians 11:7-12
A LOADED SET OF VERSES!!! Any thoughts on the ANGEL part? Where and how does Paul bring the ANGELS into the conversation, and in only one sentence as if the reader knows what he is talking about?!?
