I spend a moderate amount of my free time debunking “Christianity before Christ” speculation. I was a pagan once, a real traditionalist reconstructionist pagan, and I read the actual myths themselves, not the twistings-up of mythology pop propagandists like Dan Brown, Acharya S. and Joseph Campbell spread, and there are in actual fact – and this discovery broke my pagan heart and helped me find Christ – very few, very slim, very superficical similarities between the Gospel accoutns and any earlier myth.* Later*, Post-Christ myths, such as the Roman version of Mithraism, had a few more suprerficial similarities, but they were obviously pagans trying to copy Christianity and missing the point. Apologetics has plenty of debate threads about this topic going back a long way. There’s a semi-humorous site devoted to debunking copycatism, Tektonics, which is a little glib but has links to pages that back up its claims – something the copycat claim pushers usually don’t try to do.
I like to pass time in waiting rooms or other dull moments by plaing copycat with any two histpric/fictional/mythic figures. I have proved to Acharya’s standards and more so that Gerald Ford is just a retelling of the ancient myth of Elvis Presley.
