hey dash!
I don’t know a whole lot about it but i think Justin’s main concern is to stop the emperor (whom the letter is addressed to) from persecuting Christians. Because the emperors both before and after him, had contempt for Christianity, Justin is reacting in quet an understandable way: highlighting the similarities in order to reduce contempt.
Whats interesting about Zeitgeist’s use of the quote from Justin is that if you take the whole thing in context and read the full letter you’ll see that it actually is evidence against the case of Christianity being borrowed from paganism. Because, if you take it in context you’ll nottice that, as i said, he is trying to find similarities in order to save the lives of his fellow Christians which causes us to ask: if Christianity was ‘borrowed’ and so ‘similar’ to the mystery cults and roman and egytian religions then why were Christians being persecuted for being so different and misunderstood? Also in reading the full letter you’ll notice that he says things like “in no instance, not even in any of those so called sons of Jupiter, did they imitate the being crucified” (ch 55). This is always ignored in the things like zietgeist which say that many other ‘gods’ were crucified.
Yea there are external similarities in all Religions but thats cause we live in a FINITE universe. There is only so much empirical/material ‘stuff’ that we can use to communicate deeper Religious Truths so after thousands of years you can certainly expect some overlap. If you want to see differences in Religions you’ll have to look deeper than whats presented empirically, at the REAL message of each Religion. And Justin’s letters are a great place to do that with Christianity. Where you’ll see Chist’s mandate to ‘Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you’ being lived out zealously in the early Church.
Also the day of Christ’s birth wasn’t ‘moved’ to dec 25th His birth was just celebrated on that day. We Catholics have always been liturgical. Like replacing the pagan festival in October with ‘all hallows’ ect.
Some of this has probably been said already, im just pop’n in to the thread.
Anyway God bless you all.
