It’s hard to explain or defend the Cathlic faith in quick one-liners, but it sure helps if you have some memorized when you are challenged unexpectedly. To help us all out, please state a challenge or argument you’ve received and your response back to them. If you’ve tried it and gotten any responses, it might be helpful to add them as well.

For example, an atheist insisted that Christianity was a man-made invention.

My response was: “Really? Human men made up a religion that taught to turn the other cheek? To not kill? Have one wife? No pre-marital sex? No contraception? No divorce? And encouraged women to be perpetual virgins as nuns do? LOL!”

With this one exchange he actually admitted, “compelling points”.
 
A Protestant insisted that Mary was a woman like any other.

The person who responded said, “Doesn’t Jesus “deserve” a sinless mother?”

He admitted that Jesus did deserve a sinless mother, but didn’t change his mind.

Ah, the human construct argument. My favorite. Okay cars, jobs, houses, computers, ice cold A/C during a Texas summer, boats, internet, airplanes, shoes, etc., are all man-made. Try living without them and then tell me that, “it’s just a man-made thing, I’m good without it”
 
If we are told to keep the Ten Commandments, and “make no graven image” why would God then contradict himself and command the Hebrews to put Graven images of Cherubim on his Arc of the Covenant?

Yes, no scripture alone, NOR is the Trinity mentioned, yet Christians adhere to that because of Tradition! Just curious if you’ve used that on anyone and what their response was?

Thank you also for the graven image one. I’ve heard it, but don’t have a quick recall of it yet, but I seem to run into more atheists/cafeteria catholics than I do Protestants.
 
Then there’s, “the Church needs to get with the times!” line.

As if God changes His mind about (homosexuality, contraception, pre-marital sex…)

The fact that it HASN’T changed with the times just proves that it is God’s Church and not our church.

Well, the bible also says that your bride must be a virgin or she should be executed. We think this is silliness through the teaching of the church, not the bible. As a liberal Catholic, I trust & pray some of the more draconian teaching will go away. It can, and did, happen.
 
Why invoke a saint? Simple they are part of the cloud of believers mentioned in both the old testament (Issiah I believe) and in Revelations.

Why ask an angel to pray for you? It seems to me that there is a choir of angels who have a specific duty to take correspondence from angels and lower beings to God. I believe its the Thrones that have traditionally have had this duty.
 
Since artificial contraception divides the two natural ends of sex (intimacy and procreation), then folks who are OK with contraception should also have no problem with bulimia, which divides the two natural ends of food (enjoyment and nutrition).
 
If Jesus is the sole mediator, then why do Protestants ask one another to pray for each other? (That Bible verse has to be understood in its proper light!)
 
Catholic : “so we can agree the Bible is all truth and is free from error?”
Protestant : “Yes”
Catholic “and you believe it doesn’t contradict itself?”
Protestant : “Yes”
Catholic: “and you believe in a literal reading of the Scripture?”
Protestant: “Yes”
Catholic: “then why do you say that Christ was speaking in a metaphor when he says THIS IS MY BODY?”

Discerning, which teachings are you referring to?

After I laughed, I realized this is quite an interesting and close analogy. Sex does not always result in pregnancy and food does not always make it to the um, end as it goes to nourish us or even to nourish a baby.
