Angry Protestant friend insists that the Pope wearing a white zucchetta in Church is a direct violation of 1 Corinthians. Men should not have their head covered.

What’s an effective way to reply?

Tell your Protestant friends to go into a Synagogue on a Saturday morning and all Jewish men will be wearing a Zucchetto or as they call it in the Jewish Religion a Yamulkah, the reason being its to remind them always that God is always above them, its a very old Jewish tradition, and the Catholic Church follows the traditions of its parents the Jewish Religion, the Protestants by there very name, dont follow any Jewish or Catholic traditions of which there founder broke from but put there own version on things, hence they dont wear any head covering .

Hi Elijah,

I’d suggest a couple of things.

The verses concerned are 1 Cor 11:4-5: “Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonors her head – it is the same as if her head were shaven.”

A zucchetto does not, in fact, cover one’s head. The covering suggested here by St Paul is something more like a complete head covering, as in a hijab. So, I think your friend is mistaken here.

Secondly, is he then advocating that all women at church (since they are praying) should have their heads covered?

God bless.

Jonathan

Jonathan, these are the EXACT sentiments I had to offer. You beat me to it! 😛

Isn’t 1 Cor 11:4-5 a cultural rule, and not a moral rule? As in since we’re not apart of that culture, so we don’t have to follow that rule.

(kinda like how it is a moral rule to not commit adultery, but a cultural rule to stone to death people who do commit adultery.)

Since the Pope is neither prostestant or jewish, it doesn’t make a hoot of diffference. You ‘friend’ is just out causing trouble. Anothe example of a heresy hunter.
