Óscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador murdered in 1980, is on course for canonization following yesterday’s meeting between Pope Francis and Cardinal Angelo Amato, the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

My guess is that they were waiting for Liberation Theology to recede far enough into the past to be perceived as no longer a threat to the clerical establishment.
