LOS ANGELES — Michael Bay, known for four “Transformers” films and an action-romance about the Pearl Harbor attack, made a promise to Mitchell Zuckoff on beginning a screen version of the story Mr. Zuckoff told in his book “13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi.”

Next week will tell whether the harsh realities of a 2012 attack on a United States diplomatic compound in Libya are the stuff of transition for Mr. Bay, and cinematic catharsis for viewers whose understanding of the assault, in which Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed, has been blurred by partisan politics since the night it occurred.

The action-drama, called “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” will have its premiere next Tuesday in Texas at AT&T Stadium, where the Dallas Cowboys play their home games. The screening is a benefit for the Shadow Warriors Project, which supports private military security personnel, and other groups.

Three days later the film will be released by Paramount Pictures, hoping to capture a January audience that made past hits of the combat-themed films “Lone Survivor” and “American Sniper.”

I haven’t seen any trailers about the movie yet. I will probably go see it if the reviews are good.
 
NCR: After the fall of Col. Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, Libyan tensions fired up, and embassies were abandoned.

Then, on Sept. 11, 2012, heavily armed Islamist militants launched an organized attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi. Four Americans were killed: U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty and State Department computer expert Sean Smith.

Six CIA contractors defied orders to defend the compound. Thirteen hours later, only four of them were still alive, but they had saved more than two dozen fellow Americans.
When the heroes returned home, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama were blaming an anti-Muslim video for the attack. Even now, after emails revealed Clinton knew immediately the video wasn’t to blame, Washington characterizes the attack as unexpected and unpreventable.

Marines Mark “Oz” Geist, John “Tig” Tiegen and former Army Ranger Kris “Tanto” Paranto and a fourth man who wishes to remain anonymous want Americans to know the truth about what really happened.

Their story is told in the book 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi and has been turned into a movie, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, opening in theaters this Friday.

At the press conference last week, following a preview of the movie, the actors, writers, director and the three real-life men gathered to talk about the heroic true story. Screenwriter Chuck Hogan explained that he felt a tremendous sense of responsibility to capture the real story. “I was holding a candle of truth, so I took what I thought was a great book and build a bridge into a great movie.”

All three men were raised in various Christian denominations and are using their platform to talk about how integral their faith is to the story. “We are lucky to have our faith,” Geist said. “God is my foundation, the strength that gets me through anything.”

“Several times throughout that night,” said Tiegen, “I thanked God that I was still alive.”
During a pause in the fighting, he looked around at all the bullet holes and asked himself: “How the hell are you still alive?”

“When I’m in situations like that, I know that God’s there … whatever happens,” Geist said. “I tell him, ‘God, use me as you see fit.’” He explained that during the 13 hours of fighting, there were mortars fired with a “kill radius” of 21 feet. “I was within 15 feet of three them,” Geist recalled. “I know God got me through.”

Tiegen said he was angry when he got home and heard what was being reported. “The media twists things the wrong way, and it’s destroying the country,” he said. “Going back to having faith, it’s faith that is going to get you to want to know the truth.”
In the movie, Paranto’s character says: “Whenever bullets start to fly, I always feel protected. As long as I’m doing the right thing, God will take care of me.”

He said that those are his exact thoughts. “I felt protected; nothing was going to touch me, and I could feel the source.” According to him, God and service such as his go hand and hand. “You are doing something honorable that is above yourself,” he said. “I’m a sinner and imperfect, but when I’m overseas, I’m the closest to being the person I think God wants me to be.”

In Benghazi, Paranto said he read the Bible daily, often meditating on passages to put him at peace with God, should he die that day. According to him, once a person is at peace with the possibility of death, he stops worrying about it and is better able to focus on the task at hand.“ I tell people that, whatever they have to do, to have faith that God will get you to overcome any obstacle. You may not come out alive, but then, that’s the way it’s supposed to be.”

I just saw this movie today. I recommend everyone see it, but I know many won’t. Even though I have tried to follow the confusing events of what happened in the news, this helped me have a clearer picture of what happened that night - the 13 hours. By the end of the movie I had so many emotions, sadness, anger, frustration. Sad for the men who lost their lives that night and those injured. Anger wondering what we were doing there in the first place and anger why no one came to help and they were on their own. The death toll could easily have been over 30. 4 was too many. This movie made me more angry with the Secretary of State and President. Frustrated after all the hearings still no definitive answers that I know of why no one came to help except a small team from Tripoli. An excellent movie, but not easy to watch.
 
This was one of the best war movies I have ever seen.

And it is a true story.

I will probably see it again because now my wife wants to go.

Directed the guy who made “Transformers”? Um, no, thanks. Apparently, this movie is tanking at the box office really bad. “Bad Grandpa” is doing better. “Ride Along 2” is doing better.

The average American moviegoer has never heard of Benghazi, nor are they aware that it was investigated by Congress (repeatedly, as a matter of fact) and there’s no “there” there. If there’s no “there” there, that doesn’t make for a good movie.

Just sayin’… 🤷
 
I just wonder how ‘truthful’ the movie is, or if anything was left out, added, etc, It seems likely to me, the Govt would try to restrict Hollywood in how far they can go with a movie like this.

I havent see the movie yet, but Im assuming Hollywood had to get Governments stamp of approval as to content.

Yes, it was directed BY Michael Bay. He did a very good job too. This is a true story, remember, not fiction.
I am sure the average movie goer has heard of Benghazi. Star Wars is still pulling in a big audience. Bad Grandpa looks like a really bad movie.

No offense, but by saying there is no “there” there, shows how unaware of the facts you are and do not know what you are talking about.

EVERYONE needs to see this movie and the ones who think there is no “there” there definitely should, but won’t. This movie shows the 13 hours of the firefight at the consulate and CIA Annex. It is not a movie about the hearings. The movie shows what happened. I applaud Michael Bay for making this movie.

uh why would they need the governments stamp of approval? The movie is based on a book about the events that took place on September 12, 2012 in Benghazi at the American consulate and the CIA Annex.

I haven’t seen it but understand these brave soldiers saved dozens of lives, I have heard over 60 so coming on and criticizing a movie and pointing out other movies by the same director does not seem like a strong argument.

Surely, anyone who saves these many people are heroes whose story should be told.

It was a miracle they weren’t all killed. These brave men fought a hard fight and lost 2 of their own by the end of the battle. Two people died at the consulate. If they had lost this fight the death toll would have been closer to 40 rather than 4. The 4 bodies on the tarmac covered and waiting to be put on the plane back to the U.S. was sad. What if there had been 40 bodies?
