It would seem Pope Benedict is taking a firm hand on liberalist priests, following his address on Maundy Thursday.

*Fr Flannery confirmed to TheJournal.ie that the Vatican had contacted him to inform him of the investigation.

The Irish Catholic newspaper reported earlier today that the priest had to cease writing his monthly column in the Redemptorist Reality magazine as a result of the investigation.

Last summer, Fr Flannery welcomed Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s criticism of the Vatican’s handling of the child sex abuse scandal in Ireland.

The association, which has been described as a ‘dissident group’ by more conservative members of the Church, was also critical of recent changes to the Roman Missal. It has called for radical changes in the Catholic Church, including an overhaul of how bishops are chosen and its theology on sexuality. Some of its priests also agree with priests being allowed to marry and the ordination of female priests.*

Some additional information
The Vatican has moved to suppress dissent in the Irish Catholic Church by clamping down on two well-known liberal Redemptorist priests as well as the congregation’s monthly magazine, Reality.
Restrictions have been placed on Fr Tony Flannery, a founder of the Association of Catholic Priests, whose monthly column in the magazine has been discontinued. A clampdown has also been imposed on the magazine itself and its editor, Fr Gerard Moloney, who, it is believed, is no longer allowed to write on certain issues. Neither priest would comment when contacted by The Irish Times yesterday.

It is understood that while Fr Flannery has the support of his superiors in the Redemptorist Order, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) in Rome has expressed disquiet about some of his articles and publications.
It is believed that the views which have come under most scrutiny are Fr Flannery’s opposition to the Church’s ban on artificial birth control and his support for the ordination of women.

"…his support for the ordination of women."

In other words, he doesn`t even know what the Sacramental Priesthood is about.
Sad!

No, he disagrees with you, and others, about it. It is possible to both understand and disagree.

I was delighted when I read this - not a smug delight because I know my own weaknesses believe me - but a delight to see the Vatican acting on this matter. Liberal priests and liberal teaching in seminaries and Catholic colleges here is rife. I’ve said it elsewhere, but I’ve been taught that there is no longer such a thing as mortal sin, that there is no point in Eucharistic adoration, the Real Presence has been challenged - by both secular and religious at the highest levels. My own PP is still refusing to say the new version of the Mass. I have prayed so hard for him.

So thank God the Vatican has spotted this and acted upon it, may they continue to do so. There is a serious lack of catechesis here in Ireland, and where there is catechesis, it is often very diluted or just totally erroneous, as per the examples given above.

God help us.

yes, and he would say the same thing of those with whom he disagrees.
He disagrees with God. Theres no higher court of appeal. And to repeat: he obviously doesnt understand the function of the Sacramental Priesthood.
You don`t understand either.

I always knew the ACP to be a dissident organisation, I’m glad they are under investigation by the Vatican. 👍

makes as much sense to say, i’m an atheist but i believe that Jesus Christ is God and my lord and saviour

As a courtesy to me, would you explain please?

You are making the same point as me. I was arguing that disagreement did not mean a lack of understanding. Your words “willfully” and :knew when he was ordained…" indicate that you, too think this is a matter if disagreement, not understanding. You of course have a particular perspective on whether this priest and his friends are right or wrong to disagree, but I have no horse in this race - I am just an observer. As a matter of practical politics, I would have thought that an authoritarian crackdown on dissidence in the Irish church at the moment, given the weakened authority of those doing the cracking down, might risk adding schism to scandal.

The Catholic Church is the Bride of Christ.
Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the Head of the Church…
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her, that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, **that He might present the Church to Himself in splendour, ** without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish…
“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one.” This is a great mystery, and I mean in reference to Christ and the Church.
[Ephesians 5:21-32. Revised Standard Version]
Through the Mass and the Sacraments, the Bridegroom gives Life to His Bride (members of the Church).
The ordained priest takes the place of Christ. A woman cannot take the part of the Bridegroom. One speaker put it well: he said that marital relations between a “priestess” and the Bride would be liturgical lesbianism!
Women cannot be ordained, no matter what play-acting some misguided ones have participated in.

The marital imagery is overwhelming. But actually, marital relations (between husband and wife ONLY) are a reflection of the inner Life of God, and not the other way around:
Then God said: “Let Us make Man in Our image, after Our likeness”…So God created Man in His own image, in the image of God He created him;** male and female He created them.** [Genesis 1:26-27 RSV]
God is a Trinity.
The Father is the First Principle.
The Son is the Father`s Self-Knowledge.
The Holy Spirit is the total Self-giving Love between Father and Son.
The Divine Family.

Getting more and more away from the subject of this thread, but:
Marriage and family life should be a reflection of the inner Life of God.
The total Self-giving Love in the Godhead should be mirrored by the self-giving love between husband and wife, with nothing held back; ie contraception in any form.

Our spiritual component is another image of God: no other animal has an intellect and a will.

This post is becoming a monster: better call it quits. It hardly scratches the surface, but i sincerely hope it helps. 🤷
.

What matters is TRUTH. Pope Benedict is leading the crackdown. Hes a gentle-man, but hes not spineless.
