From the Catholic Herald:
David Cameron will not be able to exempt the Churches from a duty to offer marriages to gay couples, a senior Catholic barrister has warned.

Neil Addison, the director of the Thomas More Legal Centre, said that the Prime Minister’s assurances to the Church that they would not be compelled to perform religious marriage for gay couples are worthless.

He said two judgments by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg combined with a Court of Appeal ruling in 2010 clearly showed that the Government would be acting illegally if it legalised civil gay marriages without permitting them on religious premises too.
For those who foolishly think that churches will be exempt from participation in homosexual “marriage”…Although this is Europe, the US will not be far behind.

In the US, a Church can refuse to marry anyone for any reason. A church wedding is not a right. Now judges, jop’s etc… those who work for the government would I’m sure be forced to perform the ceremony if it was legal. But not a church.

Heck, its still legal for a church to refuse to marry mixed race couples. The minister up the road from me only is willing to marry couples who are over 25 and under 60. A priest can decide you’re “just not ready”

Indeed - however methinks the churchs’ rights are being strategized against by the Gay Lobby and eroded even as we speak - not unlike the HHS mandate - yes?

Despite all that is wrong with the HHS mandate it does specifically exempt houses of worship, so no, this is not the same thing.

This isn’t a news article, it’s essentially a Catholic lawyer giving their opinion, stating that they do not believe the law will stop people from trying to sue the Church.

Everything in this article is “could” and “might”. It’s not news. Besides, the law is on the Church’s side. And no law they would ever create would stop people from attempting to protest.

All in all, I think this is scaremongering.

Hi,
As we can see that the catholic church is under constant attack. We can see that the politics is trying to take over religion. Rightfully the two should be separate. The state cannot give directions to the church. It should be the other way round.
It is very sad to be in these times where traditional catholic values have slowly eroded from the society. Whatever the reason. Parents not being able to pass on the true catholic values to their kids. The media blasting information from all sides. Or more seriously the fact that people have lost their sense of SIN in the world.

I see this as a agenda for popularity in political circles. Not rights. Society is already twisted with the new age values, which do not go in line with catholic values.

If this goes thru… it will be really tragic. As this will compel the church to make a mockery of the sacrament of marriage. Let us all pray that this does not happen.

Bernard

I don’t know, I remember the gov saying not so long ago they wouldn’t be pushing for gay marraige at all! Now that may have been labour but governments change and so do their policies. I wouldn’t be supprised if we were forced by law to do so in the not too distant future.

Thank you for saying this, as it saves me the trouble.

The article is about the opinion of the lawyer who heads a pressure group in the UK. Fearmongering, at least in the US, is a common tactic of pressure groups. It is good publicity for the organization, helps in fundraising, and if upset members of the public contact their legislators with concern, so much the better.

Better to be pro active than re -active. One would have to be blind to not see the oncoming storm in terms of the legal assault on the Church.

Well, you never know…do you? 😊🤷

I hope and pray that Catholic Churches are not forced to marry gay people. There is no such thing as “gay marriage” except for in the eyes of the law. God does not recognize “gay marriage” as legitimate and neither do I. That said, I honestly think that if the law does try to force Catholic priests or deacons to marry gay couples then some civil disobedience is called for.

Having lost the moral dimension of government in the US, it is only a matter of time before the rights of the old moral centers (churches) are squashed. The fevered mind that believed you must put church and state in two air tight boxes with zero overlap crafted this disease. And if you know anything of history, you know how it ends.

Is the church NOW required to perform marriages for divorced persons or any other couple they feel has an "impediment’ that would prevent sacramental marriage?

Doesn’t seem likely that the church would be required to marry a same sex couple when they refuse to marry opposite sex couples for various reasons.

I think that people will have a fit if a law like this is passed in the U.S. Just look at the HHS mandate.

There is a simple solution: civil marriage registration for all, and a church wedding for those who want one and who are allowed to have one according to the Church’s rules.

Problem solved, no?

Would you include brothers uniting with brothers? How about sisters and sisters, cousins and cousins? How about four people who want to unite?

Your imagination is much greater than my ability to write clearly. 😊

We already have that, but some Protestant Churches are happy to marry gay couples but are not permitted to legally do it. And homosexual couples cannot legally refer to each other as husbands/wives, but as “partners”.
