One of the fastest growing orders of women religious in the United States is expanding to California where the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, took over administration of a Sacramento Catholic school this school year.

Perhaps more significantly, the Dominican Sisters have outgrown the motherhouse in Ann Arbor, Mich., and are planning to build two new houses of formation in California and in Texas. Each would hold about 100. The order’s lifestyle intrigued Oprah Winfrey, who featured the sisters twice on her show in 2010. As a result they have been nicknamed the “Oprah nuns.”

I don’t think Abyssimia’s post suggested Oprah had anything to do w/ this order . . the term was taken from the Catholic news agency and Oprah certainly put these dear women front and center in the secular world. I bet Mother Assumpta Long, the foundress / Mother Superior would laugh @ such a description, not scold. We have no idea how many souls have been touched by Oprah’s fascination w/ these young educated women.

It’s the kind of headline I’d expect from someone attempting to deflect attention from the nuns themselves and their extraordinary committment to Jesus, say New York Times or (dare I say it) National Catholic Reporter…

That’s an appalling nickname in my opinion. I suspect this order is only a curiosity to that woman. Her spoken position on abortion alone is enough to make me flip right past her TV Channel.

I’m not fond of Oprah either, but I love it. The sisters are a great witness in contrast to the apostle of the new age movement. No one coming toward the Truth - least of all the new sisters joining - will be confused that it’s an endorsement of or by her. Oh, I don’t mean to demean Oprah herself. I agree with you that her business savvy and showmanship is simply amazing. But her actual contribution to healthy culture is rather less. I rank her about equal to the NFL in terms of value to the culture. (Take that however you want to).

But I rank genuine nuns fully committed to praying for the world and evangelizing the ignorant through word in deed quite a bit higher. That’s why I object to calling them “Oprah nuns.”

If addressing a non-Catholic, general interest audience I think that phrase is acceptable. Some of the audience may have seen the episode featuring the nuns, and so the headline will attract their interest. Even more of the audience will simply be familiar with Oprah and consider her endorsement of them to be of some merit, so then too, the phrase will attract the attention of readers.

However, for a Catholic newspaper the phrase really doesn’t belong. Hopefully readers will be at least vaguely aware of Dominicans and have an interest in the success of a religious order in their area. While it might make sense to mention Oprah in the article, putting her at the start of the headline shouldn’t be necessary and does tend to diminish attention on the nuns.
