“Big Love” / "The Da Vinci Code" prequel controversy

They have to see the pettiness of this! God does not care about a dang Temple endowment! He does not care about sealing or temples or any other thing that they believe. What kind of God would God be if he did care! Could you imagine going to heaven and God askingnyou for the secret name or handshake you were given in the temple…this is so insane! What would he say, "you can not have your own universe now, and on top of that im casting you into “outer darkness, you should have remember the secret password”…I don’t think so!!

Uh, we don’t believe that someone would go to outer darkness if they didn’t remember a secret password. Do you understand the concepts of LDS eschatology? Many Catholics beliefs can be seen as “insane” by outsiders.

I have to tell you, I have been introduced to a whole new, and different, Mormonism this past couple days that I didn’t even know existed.

It has completely changed in my mind what I thought Mormonism was.

here’s one Latter-day Saint’s view on the “controversy”:

Fwiw, I just started watching Big Love, and don’t think it’s that bad of a show, though there are some errors here and there when “actual” LDS are portrayed. Also as far as the temple scene goes (thanks for the link! didn’t get to watch it last night), there were a couple of inaccuracies, as far as dress and some lady saying “your 15 minutes are up” :rolleyes: Also, how did she get a temple recommend? I’ve read elsewhere that she asked to borrow someone’s…:confused:
 
If LDS believes in Jesus, why did they need Joesph Smith to be a prophet? What is the “Gosple of Jesus”, Never heard of it before. I thought my Catholic Bible version pretty much spells out the path or plan of salvation and mercy.

I am not very informed of LDS ways. I am curious.

One more question- Where is polygamy okayed in the Bible (New Testament)?

Yeah, that was a part I didn’t get either. She and Bill were married, devout LDS for 15 years. She asked her mom and sister to borrow theirs, so that she could take out her endowment. ??? hello. how did she not do that already?

Also, the scene in the celestial room, there are the three women who had two recommends between them. what?

I like Big Love, it is such a soap opera. I like the LDS references, but I see sometimes they get things a little bit wrong. I have wondered sometimes if they do this on purpose, so as to keep the this-is-fiction-not-based-on-actual-characters part intact.

I thought the temple scene was respectful, but after watching it again on youtube, I’m not really sure why it was needed. Other than, to just do it.

And, I think if you have never been LDS, you wouldn’t get even a 1/4 of the LDS references.
 
Looking at the official “Big Love” website, I see that one of it’s producers is Tom Hanks. Given his involvement with “The DaVinci Code”, it seems he is an equal-opportunity opportunist.

Polygamy was never okayed in the Bible. LDS believe that because God allowed it, that it was God’s stamp of approval. Also, their additional scriptures modify what the Bible says regarding polygamy. Substantially. To another gospel, which, St. Paul warns us to not fall for.

He was raised in the LDS church, for a while. When he was a boy.

One of the writers of “Big Love”, Dustin Lance Black, was also raised LDS and left. He wrote the screenplay for “Milk”.
 
Looking through some Morman web sites, I see constant references to the Old Testament, regarding the “need” for the new prophets and saints(?). Did not Jesus say at the Last Supper, that He Himself was the “New” Covenant? This made the previous covenant with Moses nill and void. I still don’t understand why they think there were no bona-fied priests until the 1800s. God would never allow almost two thousand years for us on our own. He loves us. As always I respect others religious beliefs, I just think on judgement day, many are going to be surprised.

No, I dont understand any of it! All of our beliefs come staight from the Bible! There isn’t 1 single thing that the Catholic church does that is contrary to scripture!

yea, that was confusing to me too. I thought the temple was just for the sealing purposes. I didn’t know you could go by yourself. What does it mean that she went be herself?

Vick, I totally agree! I have always wondered why they think God would have left us for alomost 2000 years! he never has left us alone!

Actually, when my then-wife and I were married in the DC temple, we were sitting in the celestial room afterwards and were told exactly that - “your 15 minutes are up”. It was because other people were coming through the veil and they didn’t want the celestial room to get to crowded and noisy. Perfectly understandable.

I agree. A little nitpicky, but at least for me, I’ve never had that happen.

There are a number of ordinances (ceremonies) done in the temple besides sealing (eternal marriage). They are:

baptism for the dead
endowment
washing and anointing

You can go by yourself or with others (such as your family or people from your ward/church).
